Samsung in Taiwan

Small press release regarding Samsung and Taiwan:
Taipei Times - archives
In addition to the GX-20 camera body, Samsung also introduced eight new Pentax lenses designed for the Samsung DSLR standard. In professional photography where companies often make specific lenses for their own camera bodies, the idea of lens adaptability creates brand loyalty.

“Samsung’s DSLR project is still in its infancy,” Lai said. “Canon, Nikon and Olympus lenses and its DSLR offerings have been around for so long. In the future, we do not completely rule out the possibility of creating camera bodies that can house other brands’ lenses.”

Samsung is also offering the "A-TTL" flash... is it exactly as P-TTL? If so, it could be another (cheaper?) option in some markets.

Anyway, this is interesting. It suggests that Pentax won't drop the 35 mm f2 if Samsung just added it to their lineup. And it also suggests they are not giving up on the K-mount soon.

Yes Samsung flashes are compatible, this isn't anything else than PTTL.
And those lenses are nothing new, really ...

For one second, I thought Samsung was going to produce its own lenses. It seems that pentax gear owners do have a bit of back up keeping a collection of pentax lenses.

This should kill the mistaken notion that Samsung has the dedicated camera making facilities that is capable of taking over Pentax. Samsung may be a big electronics conglomerate but with regards to cameras and lenses, it is just a Pentax OEM and merely re-labels them as Schneiders or Samsung.

Indeed the stated in an interview (on DPR? not sure...) that they were considering manufacturing themselves bodies (and maybe lenses?).

That's if Pentax keeps making them for Samsung, unless those rebadges are actually Schneider-produced lenses based on licensed designs from Pentax.

That's the way it is now, but I wouldn't put anything past Samsung if they put their mind to it. They are a huge company with huge resources, both financial and technical, and could well end up doing their own thing ...maybe with an EVIL system.

Remember, the first BMW's were a rebadged Austin.

That would be interesting. Perhaps Samsung could produce multiple bodies with different lens mounts. That way they don't need to supply users with any lenses.

A Tamron equivalent, but for bodies in their case? Interesting concept, though I'd have to see what their business model will be like, since the big money with DSLRs comes from lenses, primarily.

Yes, Samsung has said that they are investigating the possibility, and Pentax has said that they hope to continue with producing the Samsung-branded DSLR - those comments was made in spring 2007.

I do wonder if Pentax has enough production capacity to support a full line up of Samsung DSLR's, which may be one of the reasons that Samsung only has the GX-20 on the market. More investments must be made here and I don't believe Hoya is interrested in paying for expanding the capacity - but Samsung may be interrested in a joint-venture operation of the Pentax (Hoya) camera factories in the Phillipines.
