I think the price drops has got more to do with simple economics than any impending release of a new flagship model.

With the global financial meltdown and flagging consumer spending power, it makes sense to get would be buyers to buy early for the Christmas season, the argument being that there is no guarantee that consumers might have any disposable income left to commit to non-essential durable goods such as cameras a few months down the road and the longer the crisis continues. Better to lower prices now to boost sales volume and reduce any inventory overhang.

Most people are belt tightening and if you're mortgaged to your eyeballs or mired in debt with the prospect of losing employment or benefits, buying an expensive camera model like the K20D might be less palatable, hence manufacturers have price cuts to entice and offer an even better value proposition. Buy that K20D now while you can still afford to buy one.

Simple. Price coming down is to reflect so-so sales and a need to liquidate stock into sales. Christmas is only a little over 2 months away and the big shopping season beginning in a few weeks. It's all about moving units and before the "new DSLR" hits the shelves...which will be the K2000D....not some double-secret upgrade to the K20D.

It's funny, last week everyone was putting their faith into the "interview" with some big-wig at Pentax who clearly says there is NO FF coming out anytime soon, but the 645D is something that may or may not come along sometime in the future, but not right away. There is no mention of another DSLR coming onto the market anytime in the immediate future other than the K2000D. With that, we had the usual running around like the world was ending because Pentax isn't going to release a FF anytime soon, nor has any solid plans top do so at all. "I'm leaving Pentax because there will never be a FF", etc, etc. Now this? Oh well, it's good for a laugh!

Exactly - the market dictates the price not the manufacturer. Nobody drops price when demand is solid; the price drop reflects a softening of demand, for which there may be several reasons - including the expectation of a new model in the next several months.

textbook answer, however may i introduce you to the word "speculation", and a quick glance at the current world economy, particulary in the US, will tell you how effective the market is at setting the fair price....
