Just bought a K-1. The original 10-17 gives a round image cropped by the goofy petal hood shape. Removing the hood should give a true circular fisheye effect at 10mm. That would be neat. Wish the original 10-17 had a removable hood.
thanks,

Still a DA lens. Do you think that lens would work on the K1 without much vignetting?
From my experience, most lens will vignette a bit. What I believe it's most important is how much a photographer will think it's acceptable.

People who have sawned and used the da10-17 said it's been quite usable, with accetable vigneting.

Also, vignette is the most easily corretable aberration in a lens.

New version of 10-17

It will be interesting to see the first tests of this new version on a K-1.

Not always.

I have the existing DA 10-17 and, while I like it a lot, the PF is a very real issue with this lens. I’ve long thought this lens would benefit more than any other from getting the latest coatings.
Honest question - can better coatings improve lens performance regarding CA/purple fringing?

They are indeed very smart at Ricoh Imaging's, Pentax products division: they have to cope with minuscule R&D budgets, therefore they chose to cancel the roadmapped Fish-Eye Zoom Lens and to revamp the DA Fish-Eye 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 with a removable hood instead, so that people could use the revamped lens with a 24x36 camera.
A fish-eye lens was included in the FF lens roadmap in 2018, then it was still in the K mount general roadmap but removed from the FF roadmap of 2019. Fish-eye is a special lens, not sure how well it sells relative to rectilinear lenses.

The Fish-Eye Zoom Lens was simultaneously removed from both roadmaps published on 28 February 2019 just before CP+.

Ron is right. If you have to make another production run it is easier to use the current coatings. A little cosmetic/function upgrade doesn't hurt either.

This is a fun lens, even on the K1. It is FF-compatible from about 14.5 mm up, and with the hood removed might be good from 13 mm or so. It will be a circular fisheye at 10 mm.

Not completely circular at 10mm:

My guess it that they have tweaked the lens hood arrangement and the lens can now be used on full frame 35mm cameras. The new lens hood could then be used with APS-C cameras.

This would make it like the Tokina version of this lens where it is available in two flavours. With a built in hood for APS-C and without a hood for full frame.

Regards

Chris
I think if they were making it so it would be usable in full frame they would have done so and added a FA tag instead of a DA tag.

Not necessarily... The officially compatible DA telephotos haven't changed designation. The HD FA 35 F2 also hasn't changed to D-FA.

I really wish they start updatint the mechanical part of DA lenses rather than coatings and cosmetics.
Rotating focusing ring during af shoul really be a thing of the past.
