Those revamps show what Ricoh isn't going to properly update (new optics, mechanics and AF motor) in the near future (or ever). Unfortunate.

The SMC DA 10-17 is one of my most often packed lenses. If the new version improves the purple fringing and has a removable hood it would be enough for me to upgrade. If the build quality improves in line with other recent releases, then happy days!

Optics are good for most of the da lenses and i dont think they should change the optics cause the trend is to go big and heavy.
But the mechanics and af implementation are really dated.

Dated, but typically neutral in terms of result, especially with ultra-wide lenses.
I prefer seeing RI optimising the lens line-up shrewdly like that, rather than investing heavily where inappropriate and finally closing Pentax.

Rotating focusing ring during af is never neutral. It is ergonomically bad design.

This doesn't have anything to do with full frame usage. This is simply a situation where Ricoh had sold current DA 10-17 fish eye lenses and was going to run another batch and decided to tweak it a bit to perhaps bump sales.

The changes are small, but HD coatings do seem to reduce flare. From what I have seen, it is usable (without the hood) from 13-ish mm to 17mm on full frame, which is something, but not necessarily a reason to buy it for your K-1 (eventually Pentax will probably come out with a full frame fish eye if you like that look).

No talk of rounded aperture blades for pleasing bokeh?

Can the fish-eye distortion effect be achieved using software there days?

With a 160° or 180° angle of view?

Of course it's a no. Fish-eye lenses have a very large angle of view and no software can recreate what hasn't be 'seen' by the sensor through a (rectilinear) lens.

Some people may be expert at using a fish-eye lens properly, but I don't think that's the majority of us. I prefer that R.I. keep their R&D budget for a 85 f1.4 and 20 f1.8 to somehow complete the K1 system, those 85mm and 20mm do find much more universal use.

Mistral is right. The thing about Fisheyes is not really the field curvature, but the amazing field of view your get with them. You can probably get an instagram filter that will give a fish eye effect, but it won't cover the real reason that people like ultra wide angle lenses. So, the Pentax DA 10-17 FE covers 180 degrees angle of view at 10mm, but the DA *11-16 only gives a 104 degree angle of view on an APS-C camera at 11 mm.

I don't personally like fisheyes a whole lot and prefer rectilinear projection (although at ultra wide angles even that can get a bit strange).
