Hmm... yet another "same lens, different coating".

Indeed, but this one with a removable lens hood (PH-RBA60) and therefore a new lens cap (O-LW70A).

Doesn't look like WR either... Well, luckily it's something that takes almost no time from developing the new toys.

I'd say* these slight revampings (HD coatings, slightly different exterior finish) are the equivalent of a 2018 car compared to the 2017 model: wholly unexciting but a way to keep things more or less competitive with small improvements.

*I don't know which forum member made the same analogy some time ago, that we should stop expecting cameras to be gamechangers every year, instead of a better replacement like a car.

Absolutely! (I should apply that to myself and upgrade my 4 full-manual lenses :P)

Apparently adding AF motor and WR build is too much to ask...

The WR build might be easier, but an AF motor would most likely force a change of the design. It's also a 10-17mm fisheye; one could ask whether an AF motor would be such an improvement when more or less everything is focused beyond one or two metres...

Adding an AF motor or WR build means making a new lens, with a completely new barrel - and then, you'd also want to update the optics.

My guess it that they have tweaked the lens hood arrangement and the lens can now be used on full frame 35mm cameras. The new lens hood could then be used with APS-C cameras.

This would make it like the Tokina version of this lens where it is available in two flavours. With a built in hood for APS-C and without a hood for full frame.

Regards

Chris

Adding WR build doesn't necessarily mean making a new lens, e.g. the HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED WR.

In some cases it might work, but if it doesn't...

I’m going to guess that in situations where a lens is worth making another batch of, but not something likely to make a ton of money, Ricoh’s applying a few inexpensive tweaks to keep it relevant.

I don’t think they’d do that for a high profile lens like the DA* 16-50, but this lens and the FA35 seem like good candidates for such a tweak...

I wonder if they snuck in a run of these while fixing the issues with the 85 f1.4?

Maybe it was time for a new production run and no old glass available, so HD is the way to go.
