From the Google English translation of the product description:

QuoteQuote:
This model is for libraries, museums, research institutes, government agencies, and other specialized institutions.
At the time of purchase, the “PENTAX KP IR Use Agreement”, which stipulates the conditions of use, must be concluded. In addition, we do not sell to general customers for personal use.
There is a corresponding 645Z IR and perhaps others. The intended use case is non-destructive analysis of historical artifacts for archeology and such.

Is the KP IR a new release, or have they been offering this for some time?

Hard to say. I could not find any sort of date stamp. The page is accessible through the menu structure of the Japanese version site as a commercial product as is the page for the earlier 645Z IR.

?? | RICOH IMAGING (Click 業務用製品 near bottom to expose)

??????PENTAX 645Z IR / ??????? / ?? | RICOH IMAGING

One thing for sure, is that these two cameras are intended for institutional sale and not as regular product.

Very cunning. I wonder why they won't sell it to the general public? (Not that I would buy one - but, there's bound to be some who would.)

OK...I took a look at the Wayback machine and the menu link is new since the Wayback Machine's last crawl, 1 June, 2019. So, yes, it was posted within the last six weeks or so. I could not find a product announcement.

Aha. thanks.

For interest, here's the article Adam posted when the 645Z IR was launched.

Ricoh/Pentax has several commercial products that are only sold business-to-business or for institutional sales. The G800 and G900 ruggedized compact camera lines are examples of the former and the IR cameras examples of the latter.

Yes, Pentax did a full-on new product announcement for that one despite being unwilling to sell through its normal distribution network.

Most companies don’t like to sell infrared cameras direct to the public after people got busted using them to prev on women in bathers. The cloth is basically see through in certain situations. Which is why it is good for non destructive artefact examination.

I still have my Sony DSC-F717 that has the movable IR filter, by default it only works in auto mode so cannot use in daylight. But with the use of a special magnet I can move the filter and take full spectrum handheld shots in full sun. Its pretty cool. Earlier models didn’t have this restriction, could be used in manual mode and caused an uproar at the time.

At our university we use a IR converted D800 as an additional camera in aerial photography for archaeological prospection purposes. It helps to identify vegetation marks, as it enhances the contrast of underground structures getting visible e.g. in ripening crop, making use of the red edge shift.

I find this great news, if Ricoh continues to support such industrial sensors in their cameras. I have already suggested that I would like to see the Q-series with multiple sensors. IR,UV,foveon...
