For example, what I'd want now is a relatively compact, high quality ultra wide. Sigma has a big fat zoom (and some old consumer lenses); thanks but no, thanks.
In which category would you put the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM | Art (2017), 20mm f/1.8 DG HSM | Art (2015) and 24mm f/1.8 DG HSM | Art (2015)? 'Big fat zooms' or 'old consumer lenses'?

I stand corrected; those are indeed big fat primes.

Just wait for the disclosure of the size of the roadmapped Ultra Wide-Angle Single Focus Lens and Large Aperture Wide-Angle Single Focus Lens (the latter a ★ lens).

Same cause, same effect...

In my case if Sigma would've released their FF Art primes for Pentax I would certainly have a K1.

I'm more tempted by the ultra wide-angle, and I hope it will be reasonably compact (it's not a "large aperture" lens). Otherwise I'd have the 15-30.

But let me put it this way: if I have to pay quite a lot on a high-end lens, and my choices were Pentax and Sigma, I'd rather have the Pentax. Say, the 50mm Art vs D FA* 50mm f/1.4.

Pentax has nothing less than 31mm in primes and nothing over 77mm to 200mm except a 100 macro. There is nothing in that range even with recent third party options unless you are willing to go with manual focus lenses. Otherwise you are trying to find unicorns like the FA 20 24mm or 85mm.

F2.8 Primes in the 105, 135, and 180mm ranges used to be the standard purchase - quality zooms coupled with increased sensor sensitivity seem to have severely limited buyers need for these. Would be interesting to see actual sales figures/requests for purchase graphed over the last 10 years.

So I just read that while Sigma drops K-mount, they added lenses to Canon M-mount. Are there really more M-mount cameras than all of K-mount?

I think so, at least in NYC I've been a lot more, and almost never a Pentax.

Yes. And I believe they're looking at more future sales due to the mirrorless craze.

The Canon M50 is the most sold MILC in Japan, so yes.

I don't know that they are unicorns. You can find FA 20s and FA 135s on ebay all of the time. They just aren't "cheap." But I don't know that any new DFA 20 f2.8 from Pentax is going to be under 450 (the going price for the FA 20s apparently).

I bought an FA 135 for 350 and am pretty pleased with it. I know it isn't ideal to have to buy used lenses, but with Pentax's history, there are actually a lot of them out there and they do fill in the gaps decently.

So that's a 1.7+1.7x+1.5x+1.4x? So assuming that the 50-500 is zoomed all the way out to 500, that's a 3034mm ... F... 38?

For when you really want to see what that man's T-shirt is saying waayyyyyyyy over in the next state.

Do you see anything in the viewfinder with this combination or is it completely black?
