Keep in mind that this is probably a sports/ birding camera. No need for articulated screen.
I am keeping in mind that there is no reason to believe this is the case anymore than it is probably a portrait, video, or head's down macro camera or that it brews a mean cup of joe.

I can confirm that the little notch in the photo is an illusion due to the angle and light. It's actually going out rather than in and under the screen (the right panel extends out). This in-develpment model does not have an articulating screen. Yes, I have seen this in up close in person. Please note that this does not mean the final version will not have it. This is still in the development stage, so anything can change at this point. What I was told is that the wait will very much be worth it.

Hmmmmm...I have a ton of vintage gear in the other room and on the table behind me and none resembles the prototype photos. IMHO the prototype is distinctly modern and clean when compared to predecessor models, i.e. free the various ad hoc bumps and exposed ports.

Perhaps you might suggest a competing product (SLR please) having a less old-fashioned design?

Pop out screen???

The rear screen looks fairly similar to the GRiii one, just rotated 180 degrees.
There appears to be a small gap around the screen of the K? that is definitely not there on the GRiii. (Or my nearest comparison - K5)
I would be very happy if this an update of the K1 'moonlander' design with a neater frame...

The OVF/LV/Video selector seems to be derived from the KP selector that was coaxially under the 3rd wheel mode selector. With no rotary mode selector for the 3rd wheel, the OVF/LV/Video selector has risen to the top.

As has been suggested by others here, the top left LV selector button of the KP and K1 may have gained a new role of releasing the screen.

Looking forward to the K? release!!!

There’s an HDMI logo on the rubber cover on the left side (left from the rear).
It is nice to see the microphone and headset ports moved to the side. One of the strangest features of my K-3 is the headset port location...full camo too.

You should align the profiles by the sensor plane indicator.

e.g.

time will tell but its put there for a purpose and not just to match up with the body.

Sorry I missed your original post with observation of and speculation about that little cut-out. Just too many to read through as I had just come upon the thread with its 24 pages of posts.

right, and it seems that the space between sensor and screen became even less than on k3. even if modern screens can be thinner than some years ago it is very unlikely that there is any screen movement mechanism under it. At least in this prototype.

The new camera does appear to be a bit chunkier than the K-3. Maybe there is just enough room in the back for at least a flip down screen a lá the KP?

Edit: nevermind, had a second look. Was confusing the K-3 and new K.

Yes...doesn't look that way in the other photos.

Everyone assumes that a movable LCD screen has to be pulled out. There is a possibility that such a screen could be operated with a “press-to-open” catch, but I must say that a notch of that shape wouldn’t be my first choice of either fingertip relief or “where-to-press” indicator. This is, of course, just a prototype, and the notch could be just a placeholder in the design.
Maybe in the production versions they'll have a doorknob, or maybe a catch mechanism like the one on the battery compartment of the original AF 360, or maybe a gate-latch. Maybe they'll go techy and have one operated via smart phone or Alexa. "Screen: 30 degree up angle."
