Has anyone done a tally and compared to the buttons on other Pentax cameras? Are any buttons existing on previous models missing?

Well I count 20 buttons including the shutter button and the d-pad on the shown prototype.

21 on the K-1 including the GPS button.

19 on the K-3II.

I was initially considering a Nikon D6 but with the computer workstation/server upgrade. I am more inclined to go for one of this new model Pentax. Since i use my K200d often i don't really feel the need for a tilty screen and besides i made a hinged mirror with small mirrors form aliexpress that sticks to velcro over the rear lcd. Two mirrors makes it more of less a canon like flip screen. No touch screen just a poor mans periscope but hey it works
Creative solution, and a money saving one a that! Well done sir.

So here's challenge 2:
So what can you build with a paperclip and a bottle cap?

Mini directional wifi antenna. That's what.

Perhaps the mystery button is "just" for cycling through
  • touch-sensitivity for the screen is off
  • touch-sensitivity for the screen is sensor-controlled
  • touch-sensitivity for the screen is on
?
Doesn't it miss a Wifi button and also a GPS button? Not that both might not be catered by the [Fn+right wheel] combination, but still

It is the LV button on the K1
I am aware of that......

The K1 playback button is in a much better place, (in my opinion) as it can be selected by the thumb of the hand holding the camera.
I've actually never had issue with the Playback at Top Left. With the camera firmly gripped with the right hand it's very easy to use the left
hand to press Playback. I've done it so often that it is now automatic and I don't have to look or even really think about it, it's all muscle memory.

Honestly, the position on the K-1 >looks< like a worse place, as it would require the camera to be held with the left hand while the thumb of the right hand is
lifted to press the button. Mind you, that's simply based on visual observation because I don't have a K-1.

Maybe it's a release button for the interchangeable viewfinder, a la LX.

Ah HA! So the mystery button, the 20th on the K-new, activates a summary on the screen reminding you that, while it is an upgrade over the K-3ii,
it still isn't as fancy pants as the FF K-1.

Why is there anything wrong with holding the camera with your left hand?

I don't have a K-1 either, but trying just now with my KP having a 55-300mm + 1.4X TC attached, I seem to hold it with both hands {left hand on lens} while pressing the "playback" button, but I believe I could handle it with just left hand on back part of lens next to body.

Nothing, 'cept that the grip is on the right. So I am always holding the camera securely with my right hand while my left is free
for accessory actions, like pressing the Playback button. Again, just muscle memory more than anything else.

For example, it is possible to hold a beer and press Playback with left hand without dropping camera or beer. If I have to
grab the camera with my left hand in order to press the Playback button with my right thumb, that will mean putting down
the beer first.

The key difference is I >always< have my right hand on the camera, while the left is only used for stabilizing while taking
a shot.

I propose it is the "voice activation" button - to allow your camera to listen to you.

But who drinks beer and does photography at the same time?

I'm with you on the K-3 playback button very conveniently placed and easy to manipulate like you described!
