No, not really. Hot shoes are not hot unless a flash is mounted and then, only when the flash is turned on.

At first I also found the flash shoe cover a bit ridiculous, but after some thought it does make sense to me. Suppose Ricoh releases a 100th anniversary camrera edition (which they still may do). Only people due for an upgrade, or those with money to spare would be able to buy that. But something like a hotshoe cover gives one the chance to personalize your camera, no matter how old, honouring Pentax's 100 years.

If people get upset about this I'd hate to see how they would react if they were the commander of a naval vessel and spotted a sailor with his/her shirttails out.

I personally apologize for Ricoh not giving away Pentax 100 Years of History Baccarat or Kagami crystal champagne flutes.

That's what it said at the site I linked, a couple of days ago. Now, at the same site, it says "O-HC171 Hot Shoe Cover has been sold out."

Nope, it won't.
The cover is a limited series item, and only made with this occasion - the anniversary in November. The camera... well, it's "just" a camera, their best APS-C to date, but otherwise not even an anniversary edition.
