I participated in the PENTAX 100th Anniversary Meeting and asked various developers.
“Can this flagship APS-C win the D500?”
"I'll win"
"Can you win 90D?"
"I'm going to make it the best I think!"

Odd. The K-New would surpass the Nikon D500 but not so obviously the Canon EOS 90D, even though the D500 is one class above the 90D?

I had a less literal interpretation of the translation...

“Is it going to be better than the D500?”
“Oh, yeah. It’s going to be great. “
“Is it going to be better than the D90?”
“Well, I’m not going to sit here and follow a spec sheet logic tree, and I can’t tell you specifics anyway, but it’s going to be great...”

But maybe my interpretation is a little too loose...

that depends on how you define 'class'. Nikon users are universally sold on D500 focusing, but they have a hard time figuring whether, for example, D500, D7500, or D7200 takes best landscape photos.

I'm not so sure the Pentax K-New is primarily meant to be a landscape camera. There is the K-1 / K-1 Mark II for that.

I can't think of any other reason to have released the DA* 11-18mm .... but maybe that is just me.

The DA Wide Zoom has been on the roadmap since February 2012 and has taken ages to develop, therefore I wouldn't link its release to any particular camera. Besides it works just fine with the KP: one doesn't particularly need a first-class autofocus, machine-gun frame rate, large buffer, 1/8,000s (mechanical) / 1/24,000s (electronic) shutter speed and so on with such a lens. On the other hand, a tilting LCD is definitely something useful with such a lens on a tripod (e.g. astrophotography)...
