I also hope that Pentax will offer new version of K-m close to the end of 2009, with new sensor. K300D and K30D are in work already and will be ready close to the spring of 2009.

I'm happy Ogl, taht you noticed that indeed the A900 doesn't bring anything to the table as far as noise is concerned compared to APS-C.

Nikon does much better however, this is the usual tradeof, if Mpix goes to high, you do not gain on the noise problem but Nikon decided to stay with 12Mpix.

Everybody is quick to jump all over the A900, but...

All we've seen from the A900 thus far is pre-production samples. Might want to wait and see what the final product can do. I can imagine the howling that would take place here if a pre-production Pentax product was being given the same treatment.

Nikon btw will come with their own high resolution FF dSLR, they're just going to take the time to do it better, that's all.

I see dpReview now has a full review on the A900

Still, about half the high ISO shots are those taken with the "beta" camera.

Comparing noise between a 10mp and 24mp camera just doesn't really make sense; by downsampling properly you could produce a 10mp image from a high-ISO A900 RAW file that's got excellent per-pixel sharpness and very low noise. There was a comparison between a downsampled A900 file and a full D700 file, and the Sony came out very well (you could do similar things downsampling a 15mp K20D file, on a smaller scale). Noise-per-area is a lot more important in the long run than noise-per-pixel, which is unfortunately what most comparisons measure.

More relevant, the image quality produced by current pentax cameras leaves little to be desired, and future offerings, whether APS-C, FF, or MF, will no doubt only serve to improve on that.

Of course, that doesn't mean the product will be a hit. The smaller manufacturers, Pentax and Olympus both, really need to step up their marketing to have an impact. Both have similar strengths (portability, build, and great glass) and often offer quite a bit more at the same price point than the big two (or sony, now that they've suddenly exploded). But the lack of marketing is what's really killing them.

Signal-to-Noise ratio over (spatial) frequency.

I have no idea why this is a trivial fact in the audio community but nobody is getting it in the photo/video community. Whenever the pixel count changes, this trivial fact is ignored again...
