I personally aggree, but the k3 ii is officially out of production and Pentax themselves thought of the kp as a replacement. I decided to go for the k3-ii although the kp was already available at that time.
As I understand it, most Pentax statements have said that the KP was never intended as "flagship"; my suspicion is that they thought of the K-1 series as now being only being only flagships, were caught by surprise by the reaction that they are too slow in native mode and too small in crop mode, and have been improvising ever since.

I remember reading differently, but cannot provide the source right now and it would be a single source anyway. You are propably right about this.

Are there any backside pictures from the k-new modell prototype?

Touch screen?

When I hand my camera to someone, they often want to treat the screen as a touch screen - pinch and zoom. I see the relevance of that, even if I think it is a feature wayyyy down on my list.

Other than that, what are the benefits of a touch screen on a DSLR?

It will be harder to get your nose prints in an investigation as they are overshadowed by finger prints.

On a more serious note: It is just the way to go these days. Also: If you are using live view it is really handy to set a focus point this way.

... I could see the advantage if you could point on an exact point on the screen and AF would lock on that. But that is not going to work on a DSLR - at least not 100%

A prototype has been present at every 100th Celebration, and every report thread I have seen has had several photos of it. The one below was posted here:

In live view mode where it uses contrast af it already does for other brands. Why should it not be possible?

Since so many have been sold, the best source would probably people actually using the GR3.
Wander over there, and ask whether and how they are actually using it.

Simply disable the touch part of the screen when the screen is flipped out. I don't see why it has to be an issue.
With both I suspect the K-New will bump up against a price ceiling Ricoh/Pentax may not be willing to get above.

Another theory on the proximity sensor is that it would turn on a hybrid VF.

Other manufacturers seem to have found working solutions for this. Look at the Nikon D850 which is designed for rough daily use having both a touch and a movable screen.

If Pentax would release this camera, I would immidiatly go for it.
Thanks for pointing that out. After doing a bit'o'reading I can see I'm mistaken. There's several premium cameras out there with movable touchscreens.
