Or you could just use the astro tracer function and a red enhancing filter and get great results without the expense of buying another camera.

not really, the broad band IR spectrum is cut by the filter and the information is lost. A red enhancing filter might add contrast but it doesnt create data out of thin air

The reason why you use an IR modified astrocamera is to capture wavelengths that normally get cut out by the IR filter in a regular camera. The hydrogen alpha wavelength is the primary wavelength of certain nebula and other deep space objects, and you will get more detail since that information isn't cut out.

I don't regard Pentax DSLRs as simple. They are advanced DSLRs.

Simple ergonomy, advanced functions such as :

1- astrotracer : only on Pentax,
2- pixel-shift : only on Pentax (but other use resolution enhancement via multi-exposure like Olympus and Fuji)
3- composition adjustment : only on Pentax
4- TAV mode : only on Pentax (equiv. to M mode + ISO auto on GR III and other brands)
5- green button : only on Pentax
6- sensor shake reduction : first on Pentax (and Minolta)
7- effective "all weather"/"weather resistant" sealing : systematic on Pentax after K-S1
8- pentaprism versus pentamirroir : systematic on Pentax since K-S1
9- in-body raw development : first on Pentax
10- DNG raw format : first on Pentax (and Leica)

The actual technical "limitative" exceptions being :

- 1/125s to 1/200s maximum flash synch on flagships (but largely improvable with HSS external devices >1/8000s or LS "old" lenses >1/500s)
- maximum 33 AF points in SLR mode on flagships (until next K-2)
- no 4K video, and low profile video tech in general

Canon came up with a camera specifically for astrophotography. Does anyone know what's the difference between that camera and a simple DSLR like Pentax. After all, I've seen a lot of fabulous astro shots by some members here.

Nikon has the D810A as well and that also has the same kind of Filter mod as the Canon A cameras do. Since the D810 uses the same Sensor as the K-1 modding a K-1 might be a more affordable way to go. The D810A goes for around $3800 for the body. At that price I can get a cooled FF astro camera that will be better.

You can use it for normal shooting, but you'd have to have a custom white balance set for it. The older Canon 20DA and 60DA has the ability to set a custom white balance for terrestrial photography. I don't see why the Canon EOS RA wouldn't nor the Nikon D810A.

Hell; I'm half tempted to pick up a used K-1 and have the modification done by Spencers including a cooling system and I'm still less than the EOS RA or D810A and I'd have Astrotracer to boot!

I feel my credit card starting to feel warm.

No offense to Canon but, for me to customize my white balance so that I'll be able to use it for a regular shoot is awful. Maybe there are a lot of people with lots of money who'll buy their camera and brag about it. Despite the fact that they might say that the Canon camera is a Ferrari, I still like ab Isuzu 4x4 that can go anywhere and do almost everything and that would be a Pentax.
