Curious; for me it's normally the other way around . I have to ask; what application requires 1/32 or 1/64 in that isn't more easily covered by, respectively, 312 and 156 um?

None that I can think of. Just slightly quicker (for me) to mentally add/subtract with fractions (in the line of 1/2x) than with decimals 3 or four digits long (though I can do that fine too).

Although I love metric and liked teaching measurement, Base 12 'dozenal' has the advantage of being divisible by more whole integers to return whole integers than Base 10.

I had a book containing the history of this stuff when doing my teaching diploma.

Here, the cars do have both, but the MPH is tiny.

If you take the most common speeds here, it's pretty simple if you only have a speedometer in mph:
120 km/h ~ 75 mph
100 km/h ~ 60 mph
50 km/h ~ 30 mph
30 km/h ~ 20 mph

I knew a guy with a car only displaying mph, so he had little sticky with conversions for all the different speeds you see.

For a couple years in college I had a big Healey with Canadian KPH gauges. I bought it from.a frat brother who got it from his sister who got it from an aunt in Toronto.

At any rate, I marked the major MPH speed increments on the speedo glass in red grease pencil (55 MPH very LARGE!!) and never internalized the conversions.

My wife {who was born and raised in Brooklyn} says she never understood Western objections to a national 55mph speed limit until we drove and drove and drove across Wyoming.

Being from Wyoming (a long time ago) - distance is measured in cases of beer not miles or kilometers. Depending on how fast you drink it, you get time of travel, not including rest stops.

Yes, as much as it is fun to stop and investigate, across the long distances in the West, there's a significant driving time difference between going 60mph and going 80mph.

I have had many instances of being in Yellowstone/Teton/anywhere in Wyoming and having people as how many hours it is to X. We told them in it's x DAYS and they say - It only takes 5 hours to cross 4 states back home... I don't understand.

It takes two days to travel diagonally across Wyoming (no interstates go diagonally across the state). It takes two plus days - three nights - to get from the Puget Sound area to the town where I was raised (using the 85MPH interstates in between the areas - Idaho-Utah-Wyoming). States west of the Mississippi are huge compared to states in the east of the country. The county where I grew up is larger than Connecticut and Delaware combined and it is not even in the top five counties measured in area in Wyoming.

Wyoming - a good place to be from, not a lot of opportunity there.
