Putting on my journalistic hat... Perhaps we are getting a bit ahead of our selfs? Sure, there are some very plausible clues that this lens is a rebadge of the Tamron. But I haven't seen a definitive conformation that it is. And if it is, it is the job of Pentax to convince potential buyers it is a worthwhile lens to buy for the price they are asking. And they haven't had the chance to do make their case. I'll wait with judging this new lens until the official information is out.
Have you seen the overlay gif I made?

The af-button, the window, every single ring and top screws are exactly at the same position. There is no chance this was by accident.

I'd be very surprised if this new lens would not optically beat both of the ones you mention - they are both old designs now.

I actually have both of them, each has its good and bad points. With the f4 you lose one stop, but if this lens is anywhere as good as the recent releases for IQ (15-30, 24-70, 150-450) then - in my opinion - the IQ is worth the trade-off, as well as the reduced weight compared to the Pentax f2.8.

It's worth a try anyway!

You can get the older Tamron 70-200/2.8 or Sigma 70-200/2.8. Both are 1.2-1.3kg which is less than DFA*70-200/2.8 and both cost less and provide more light than DFA70-200/4.. and its rather difficult to beat 70-200/2.8 lens closed to F4 with wide open F4 lens..

I am not immediately familiar with either.

1. Are both WR?

2. What kind of in-lens AF motor does each have?

3. What interface does each provide? KAF2?

1. No

2. Tamron is screw drive, Sigma HSM (for newest versions anyway)

The Tamron is old, but assuming good QC, sharp. Screwdriven. No WR. Sigma did have an HSM version, but I think that's been discontinued for awhile.

But like they've both moved onto updated models that will never see the light of day in K mount. G2 = Tamron, Sports/Contemporary = Sigma.

Haha - cannot argue on the Tamron screw drive - it can be a noisy beast. Not great for shooting wildlife :-)

3. KAF for the Tamron (screw drive) and KAF3 for the Sigma (HSM, no coupling with the camera AF motor, mechanical aperture coupling).
