I am the odd one out for sure, but I loved the output of that lens on the K3. I now have the Nikon D500+500PF, and still am contemplating a repurchase of the DA560 to use on the new K aps-c flagship. Not to replace the Nikon combo, but to go alongside it.
This is interesting to me; the DA560 with the KP is capable of great results, but I find it a harsh mistress; it requires great technique and / or luck for me. Not sure which…

... the FA*200mm f/4 [IF] ED Macro and 250-600mm [IF] ED f/5.6 would be safe bets.

I sincerely hope so - these would be the top two Pentax lenses on my wish list!

Or just use the DA560?
With a length that does not fit in a sensible bag and a minimum focusing distance of almost 6 m this is not an practical option in the field, especially not on foot. The compact, lightweight super teles (and tele zooms) from the competition show that one can achieve great quality without resorting to bazooka designs. I am sure Pentax can do better than the dated DA560 and I would be prepared to pay some premium for that rather than support the competition.

It depends on the end user as to what constitutes as lightweight super teles, for some it could be a 500mm lens that is less than 10" long and less than 3.5 pounds

Or for another it could be a 400mm lens that is less than 8" long and 2.5 pounds. It is even more true when you compare these lenses to a 500mm that is 6.8 pounds and is 15" in length those lenses are compact and lightweight

I'm still waiting for the diffraction limited f/2.8 500mm sub $500 pancake lens.
For lightweight super telephotos there is always this lens. I own one it isn't great but for it's cost it surprisingly doesn't suck that bad.

Check specs on the Sony EF 200-600, this weight (2.1 kg) and length (318 mm) meets my definition and the lens has OS and it is a decent price (the only drawback is that you have to get a Sony body which is not cheap, has no GPs and does not havethe excellent Pentax controls and menu (K-1/ii a real pleasure to use in this regard). If Pentax could produce a similar lens to the Sony 200-600 it would make a great companion to the K-new (and pretty much every other Pentax body). The Canon and Sony super primes are also very decent weights and sizes but their prices are eye watering!

I might be to tired after 10 hours of working at the computer, but I fail to understand "GPs". You probably are not talking about the Grand Prix edition, I guess.
The 200-600 is quite interesting indeed, but I won't expect any other super tele other than the 150-450 by Pentax in the near future.

I think you will find its an FE,not a Canon mount!

TAMron produces 150-600s that are a touch lighter than 2.1kgs.Ricoh would probably like to have reach to 600 but not at the expense of cannibalising the 150/450.A 1.4TC is more of a likelihood.

Maybe we just need to toughen up. The "Pentax Lenses and Accessories" brochure which included the "A" lenses describes the SMC Pentax Reflex 2000mm f13.5: "... it weighs a comparatively light 8 kilograms ..."

Just do more weights work and they will all seem compact and lightweight. (I don't mean you, Pål. I am sure you can still swing a double-edged battle axe. )

I have a 500mm lens that works on my K-3ii, weighs 12 ounces, and is 120x85mm. And cost $30. Image quality isn't spectacular, a fixed f/8 aperture, and it has this weird doughnut-y bokeh, but it is a compact, lightweight super telephoto lens.

We're getting closer, though:

Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM - 1200g, 233mm
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 500mm F5.6E PF ED VR - 1460g, 237mm

My slip: GPS. a killer Pentax feature for me, you read the schlep that other brand users have to go to!

I think Pentax can do better than the 150-450 with TC and I am looking for something better without TC. The new DFA 50 & 85 mm primes are evidence that IQ still matter to them, now we need it at the longer end of the spectrum too.

I've recently read a bit about the old Olympus OM system. It had a few very interesting telephoto lenses with unusual combination of focal length and max aperture; for example, 250mm F/2. I wonder if Pentax could go similar route and release a lens like this along with a pair of high quality 1.4x and 2.0 TCs, therefore giving us 350 F/2.8 and 500 F/4 options with this one lens. Of course, that would involve some tradeoff in IQ, but nowadays TCs are quite good.
