Development officially announced 22 minutes ago at 10pm UTC.

Development in progress of the lens HD PENTAX-D FA★85mmF1.4 SDM AW - RICOH IMAGING EUROPE S.A.S
  • Lens mount: KAF4
  • Minimum focusing distance: 0.85m
  • Maximum magnification: 0.12x
  • Filter diameter: 82mm
  • 9-blade diaphragm (rounded)
Maximum magnification at 0.12 is a little better than the Samyang/Rokinon 85mm f1.4 at 0.10, so it will not be able to play macro on weekends, but it should focus close enough to not annoy too many people.

The FA* and A* f1.4s had a magnification of 0.11, so the new one's a little better there, too... (though the M85 f2.0 is 0.13...)

I expect it will cost 10-20% more than the 50. That would put it at about US$1300.

I don't believe this means they've just started developing it, especially considering the info provided. They're just breaking cover officially...

Clearly the M85 is the best (joking, sort of).

In addition, the materials used by Star 85 are very luxurious.
Used 3 super ED
This fluorite grade glass
Only 2 tablets were used on DFA70-200 / 2.8
3 lenses for one fixed focus
Too extravagant ~

Perhaps I will compare this new lens, the A*85/1.4 and the M85/2.

I've found that f/8 is the great equalizer.

In my view the M85/2 is an excellent lens. It is very small and has a super smooth bokeh. There are lenses that resolve better but the overall feel of M85/2 images is just great.

There seems to be something about lenses with very thick lens elements (the 55/1.8 is another one) that appeals to me.

I hope they got the bokeh right on the new 85/1.4. If so, I'll buy it for sure.

My Rokinon 85/1.4 is super nice but only MF.

An extension tube will do it

I don't think it is needed.
I "simple" (rare I know) KAF2 should do it IMO

There are some discrepancies between the various press releases concerning the (tentative) launch date of the HD Pentax-D FA★ 85mm f/1.4 SDM AW:
  • French and German press releases: 2020
  • English press releases (both the one from Ricoh Imaging UK and the one from the Japanese website): late 2020
  • Japanese press release: second half of 2020
I would be inclined to follow the Japanese one... with a big, though implicit, 'or later'.

I don't get why people feel entitled to be informed precisely when Ricoh Imaging starts development of a product, and not a day later
It was the same with the K-new: the "nothing was done before the September announcement" outrage.
