I am looking forward to this one. My guess is more in the area of $1800 than cheaper though.

It could be 1799€ at launch. It does look incredibly good. Also big, but that was something to be expected.

Canon's EF 85/1.4L was 1600 on release. $1800 is what the Sony cost, and Pentax has had a tendency to price (relatively) lower. I would say $1500-1600, most likely 1600 (okay, 1599). About as much in € after taxes.

It should be popular but that's a bold statement, especially considering the existence of the FA77 and the existence of mainstream focal lengths focal lengths like 50.

Or maybe by "coveted" you mean "not purchased, but wished for"? In that case I agree, although the 200mm macro will be a strong contestant

Coveted? Definitely the 200 macro.
For the 85, I have the Sigma 70, the Tamron 90, the DFA 100 and the DA* 55 1.4, just among primes. The area around 85mm is an already heavily populated focal length.
Now lets discuss zooms.
DA*60-250, F 70-210, DA 55-300 PLM, DA 18-135, DA 16-85, you have to really want that 1.4 to want this lens.

The 85 ƒ1.4 T 1.4, at 3 meters DOF is .1 meter
The DA*200 2.8 at 5 meters is .1 meter
DA* 55 1.4 at 2 meters .11 meter

If you want narrow DoF, you might already have a lens that will get you the image you want.

Unless you're a working pro like LeRolls and that's the focal length you're most comfortable using day in day out it would be hard to justify, at least for me.

I suspect this lens will seriously outperform the 77.

I agree. The 77 is wonderful for its size.

But this thing will be big, there's a huge amount of corrective glass in there.

The DFA*50 f1.4 and the FA50 f1.4 are simply different beasts in optical performance.

90% of the news is obvious... the dimensions are new, almost the same as for Sigma Art. I will get one when available. My 50 is happy to get a brother.
Hope you'll have room in that bedroom for another bed ... at some point in time (who knows what the camera market, or indeed world economy will look like?) ... there will be a 35mm f1.4 or whatever sibling.

Then it's got to beat the rather excellent DA40XS :-)

True. It's sort of hard to believe the job that pancake manages to do on the K-1.

A legacy of its heritage as the M40 f2.8 on film.

The thing is, Pentax shouldn't care really if there's 3rd party glass that hits near what they're targeting; their aim is to provide a top-flight lens to those that want it if there's enough market space to make it worth their time. They're probably better off leaving, say, 11mm or 12mm glass to 3rd parties, while they really need an obvious portraits prime (or two or three) available for those that want it from the OEM. So the FA 77, plus this thing, they're in pretty good shape, only maybe missing a 100 f2 or 135 f2.8, etc. For primes you list a Sigma macro that is out of production, a Tamron macro that honestly probably is not going to be in production that much longer (if it's even still produced today in a factory), one of Pentax's own macros (which seems quite good but...) and a crop-body lens that isn't that close to the focal length we're talking about. The macros mentioned are great lenses but they're not fast focusing and some folks won't see a macro as a good portrait lens. I think my Tamron 90 f2.5 is great for portraits wide open but everything you mentioned save maybe for the DA*55 is sharper wide open.

I do agree that you don't need extremely fast glass at exactly the same focal length to get nice thin DoF shooting options. I recently purchased the Pentax M 75-150 f4 for a portraits zoom for my film kit which can also eek out pretty thin DoF shots as needed. It is nice, though, to have that fast wide-open aperture for lower light shooting for when you don't want or can't muck about with artificial lights. Ultimately I don't think this lens is what a lot of folks take home if they go shopping for a portrait prime but it is good to have an option like this available. I hope Ricoh has good return on investment.

Going by the announcement in the Netherlands, there is nothing to see. I can read Dutch reasonably well. The page only announces the development of the lens, no word about actual availability.
