They talk about reduced LoCA. It seems the often referenced Sigma 85mm Art has some room for improvement:*

https://www.cameralabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/loca_Sigma85f1-4Art_10572-6-7.jpg
same for the Canon:
https://www.opticallimits.com/images/8Reviews/lenses/canon_85_14is/loca_f14.jpg
and the Zeiss Otus:

The Nikon couples LoCA with ghastly Halos in front of the focal plane:

https://www.cameralabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/loca_Nikon85f1-4G_71459-61.jpg

Will also be interesting to see if it has focus shift. The Sony 85mm GM suffers badly there:

* = For a laugh on dptabloid typical fanboyism you can read what Dxomark / dptabloid have to say to this level of LoCA:

My fav bit of the development story is this "We set the competitor products in the same class in recent years with amazing performance as the benchmark for this lens, but there are some lenses in the 86mm filter diameter." - Hello Otus

Again as I might have mentioned once or twice before, Pentax sees it glass competition as the Zeiss's, the Leica's and here it is proudly, confidently stepping to the mark.

Oups, ok. Well, my guess is that there has been some last minute price decision as this is more than the suggested UK price and SRS are never above.

During his press conference Dominic said this is through no fault of himself.

They had better Stay Alert

Right I'm going to stop teasing my UK friends (to those wondering what the last few posts were about - the UK pricing is higher than anywhere else, probably down to Brexit, which was sold on the premise that 'Global Britain' could strike better deals. Not the case here. Next up is 'dominic' aka Dominic Cummings, special adviser to the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the architect behind the 'Vote Leave' win, the Conservative party win in the last elections and strangely enough sat in on high level meetings to decide how to deal with the Covid-19 emergency - let's let it rip and let herd immunity sort it out, well yeah, they are topping the charts in this part of the world. Turns out that during the lockdown, he took himself, his wife and 4yo on a 260km trip to either test his eyesight or to stay at his wife's family castle, he is getting some heat for that. My 'Stay Alert' jab is ref the easing of restrictions when the UK went from Stay Indoors to Stay Alert..)

The Pentax uses a lot less special glass than the Otus or even the Milvus. Will be interesting to see performance.

Hmm can't embed the milvus diagram for some reason. Well well direct link it is.

https://www.zeiss.com/consumer-products/int/photography/milvus/milvus-1485.html#data

Edit: That seems to be the case for the 50mm as well. But the Pentax 50 has more elements just less special ones.

Correction - it's now £1999

At this rate of price reduction I might be able to afford it after lunch

(Shush about Brexit, I'm hoping everyone will forget about THAT!!)

To be fair, when comparing to other brands, you should take their latest designs, eg. the Canon RF85mm f1.2:

quote DPReview: "As we've seen throughout all of our samples, longitudinal chromatic aberration, which typically shows up as purple and green fringing in front of, and behind, the focal plane is simply not an issue at all with the RF 85L"

Nikon's latest Z prime lenses like the Z50mm f1.8S or 85mm f1.8S are also very well corrected for LoCa, the 50mm e.g. has virtually none (being f1.8 of course, but still extremely good for a 550,- lens) , where the Pentax 50mm f1.4 has pretty noticeable LoCa. No doubt Nikon's coming Z85mm f1.2S will be as well corrected as the Canon RF85

I think there are some similarities between the Otus and Pentax... both have concave front elements. However, Pentax is cheaper, has autofocus and fits my camera.

So, where are the comments that this lens is a rebadged Zeiss?

Haha, fitting the camera you own is an advantage for some.

It's more of a theoretical/curiosity question. People above are talking about Otus performance. If pentax achieves Otus performance with a simpler* design Zeiss engineers should go cry in the bathrooms. I think it's unlikely.

*actually not simpler just less special glass

I don't have any need for lenses that don't fit my camera - have you, or someone you know, found it to be advantageous to have any such lenses?
