The Large Aperture Wide-Angle Single Focus Lens first appeared on the roadmap on 23 February 2017. Prior to that date there was a Large Aperture Ultra Wide-Angle Single Focus Lens on the roadmap.

Then begins the rumour saga.

2. Large Aperture Wide-Angle Single Focus Lens

This lens is a 'D FA' for full size format and a '★ lens' (this is almost certain). Concerning its focal length, Mr Iwasaki said 'We are thinking about 35mm, 28mm and 24mm', but I was told '24mm' is almost decided (I am confident with that). Among the 35mm, 28mm and 24mm, 24mm is the most difficult to design, but they intend to dare to aim for it. I agree with the aim at 24mm. Of course the f-number will be 'F1.4'.

As for the scheduled release date, everyone please wait serenely until 'the end of 2021'.

Since when? From whom?

Well I don’t know anything and haven’t been in a position to hear anything in quite some time.

Ref 85 they referenced an 85 with an 86mm front element as a benchmark which pointed me towards the Zeiss Otus.
If it talks like a duck, walks like a duck and you would have to squint (like a duck) to see the differences in the optical diagrams...
I like how the rationale was "our old FA* design wasn't cutting it, so we looked at the Otus and thought... the concave front is the key, the lens is great, but they didn't manage to add AF and they have 86mm filters, I think we can improve on that". Lo and behold.

-Complaint #1 about the Otus: no AF. Problem solved.
-Complaint #2 about the Otus: costs a kidney. Well the D FA* 85 comes bundled with a K-1ii for the price of an Otus, so you're actually ready to shoot . Problem solved.

Honestly I'm more than well served enough with the 77 and I already need to save a lot for the 21 Limited, but the 85 is a show of force.

Ok, that's about as close to perfection as I've ever seen.

Yep. Those MTF curves are ridiculous.
That is why I suspect quite a few people will be willing to pay the premium for this lens.

They aren't really curves so much as straight lines at the top of the graph. I have never seen MTF charts like that before. I honestly didn't think it was possible.

On the subject of whether the unannounced wide angle DFA* will be 24, 28 or 35, I think the more reliable indications point to 24mm. Last year Ricoh reissued the 35/2 lens. I don't see why they would do that if they were going to make an all-new 35mm lens.

I also think the next wave of FF lenses will have to address low-mid end zooms to make the system more approachable to amateurs. Continuing to work with Tamron probably makes sense here - they could fit 3-4 gaps quite easily in that way.

f2.8 class: 15-30, 24-70, 70-200 (all present)
f4 class: [wide zoom], [standard zoom], 70-210
Variable aperture: [wide zoom], 28-105, [tele zoom]

I'm not sure if both wide zooms are necessary, but one or the other would be great, given how huge the 15-30 is.

Where? Do you have a link?
I've been looking and not seeing, but that could be a form of domestic blindness.

My point with recycling the FA*85 was that, were Ricoh to pick that route, and they priced it right, I think people would appreciate it but it wouldn't blow minds and further convince outsiders that there's good glass over here available from Pentax. I don't think they could do that at all with the FA*24's design. As polarizing as that lens is and with all of the negativity on its performance I doubt it was given more than a sideways glance during the design process.

It almost looks like the line(not curve anymore) is going past 100% at some point.

Technically, what your image shows is "Bokeh CA", not CA (in the technical sense of the latter term).
There is no such thing as a separate "Bokeh CA". It simply is LoCA. The green/magenta in front of behind the focus plane is LoCA. It is precisely green and magenta, because the red/blue light doesnt converge in the focus plane as it should.

- Not that it is hugely important what funny name to give it.
