I'm wondering if there's going to be the next longer step in the progression from the D-FA*50, to the D-FA*85, to something 100mm or longer in the next few years. D-FA*135, for instance. With the * glass coming out of Ricoh (at a slow trickle) it really feels like they want to position Pentax against Leica for the first time in decades.

They did their market research on line and many of us filled in the form. I can't imagine a 135 being near the top of the list, but who knows? I suspect if there was the kind of demand there obviously was for the 50 and 85 it would already been the roadmap. I'm sure Pentax is focussed more on what they can sell than being like Lieca.

I could see it happening. They would really need to start playing into their heritage and market dominance of the 60s-70s to remind people why they're important.

I think the move to do the 21mm Ltd makes more sense right now than a 135. And then there's the 24 (I think that was the leaked focal length?) star lens that follows (I would think a 28 would make more sense but whatever and I know I have a bias there). I guess the question is, a full-frame prime in the teens, or a full-frame prime somewhere between 100mm and 150mm? Or are there other fish to fry that I'm not thinking of.

I think a lot of the new Pentax glass over the last few years has been great and what the user base really wants to buy (save for the rebadged 70-210 which doesn't seem to review well, and I'm not sure what to make of reviews of the HD FA 35 f2) so I trust management's judgement even if I'm not getting the products I specifically want.

I really wanted a DFA* 28 or 35mm next but everyone here has been parroting 24mm for a while. A 35 is a pretty standard focal length for a system and it's important we have a great one, imo.

My hope was an arty 28mm f1.8 Ltd and then a D-FA*35 to replace the Sigma 35 Art which I'm sure is going out of production in k-mount if that hasn't happened already.

This thread isn't about that. It's about what looks like an amazing lens, the D-FA*85, which I hope gets more people into the Pentax system if they were waiting for a top-flight 85mm lens.

It's what they need to do. Pentax as the "Working man's Leica" is the way to go.

Thanks for the pictures. Could you please post more portrait photos which would be best for this focal length?

Will you stop it please, The IQ is driving me crazy.

I'd have to save 2 years to get one.

Your images really show it off.

Mostly people chronically critical of Pentax, who like myself only have the price to complain about.

You know they aren't going to sing a different song.

For people like myself who favour 70-105 for portraits on full frame and who never took to the Nikon 85 or Sigma 85, this is like our dream lens. I just so rarely shoot portraits anymore I was willing to say "well it's a portrait lens and I don't shoot portraits." He's taken away my logic for passing on this lens.

I agree about the 35mm. IMO more important than a 135 but I can see how a DFA*135/1.4 or /1.8 might be nice. Note a that DFA*200/2...
Ok, let's stop here.

Zygonyx is a provocator! Beautiful process with this lens at Versailles? A king palace for this king of bokeh? A 85 focal length is not only for Portrait pictures.

For example, Jeanloup Sieff made his reputation thanks to Wide-angle lenses for portraits. When I used to go to where he lives in Paris XVII°, I could notice every part of his flat where he made some of hese most famous 24x36 B&W nude portraits.... I miss him.
