(...)
It's a lens specifically designed for short-flanged (mirrorless) mounts. It could be made in Canon EF-M, Canon RF, Fujifilm X, Leica L or Nikon Z mounts, not in Pentax K mount.

Those are just numerical examples.
The patent is obviously linked to the upcoming 16-50mm f/2.8; no 15-45 f/2.8 or 18-105 f/2.8 is to be expected. As usual, the rumor site missed the real lens!
I believe that was in a separate post on the site, published at a different time.

As for numerical examples vs. actual plans, that's already been argued ad infinitum on the other site. For some reason, pointing out that Ricoh would be legally within their rights to make one or several products based on a patent, triggers some people.

I remember the discussion a bit differently, and more accurately I would say.
But I would rather not restart it, just like I would not restart the discussions about notches. Let's stick with the facts: we are expecting a DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 PLM.

And are you going to pretend that anybody was disputing that?

If you're looking for an argument, I'm not interested.

Once they complete the line refresh (motor upgrade) for 16-50/2.8, 50-135/2.8, 200/2.8 and 300/4, we will have a great apsc lineup!
Just do it faster Pentax!
To my thinking, the best all round combo lenses in APS-C for most photographers would be the DA* 16-50 and the DA* 60-250. I use this combo whenever I go on a vacation and I have two bodies so I can quickly switch cameras as necessary. You could argue otherwise depending upon your needs, but I find this an excellent combo if I have to limit myself to two lenses. The use of two bodies has greatly enhanced my photo taking opportunities when out and about.

I thought the optics were not the main concern, at least not initially, but the failing SDM motor was. Everyone always seemed to ay it was a little step up from the 16-45mm, and a big one up from the kit lens.
The original 16-50 is a bit of mixed bag. I have had three copies.

The negatives:
- Soft and glowy at 2.8 except for the center
- Purple fringing problems at wide apertures
- SDM (do I need to say more?)
- De-centering issues. 2 out of 3 copies I have seen were de-centered.
- Over-priced. Maybe in 2007 it's pricing was reasonable. But $1000 today is not reasonable given its performance.

Positives:
- It's the only weather-sealed fast normal zoom available
- Stopped down and focused correctly it does have a bit of magic in terms of rendering, color, micro-contrast, etc
- From what I recall it has pretty nice sun-stars stopped down.

Given its poor performance wide-open I would recommend the 16-85 over the current 16-50.

I'm really looking forward to the new PLM version. I expect it to address all the deficiencies of the original lens and I'm glad that Ricoh has been able to update it comprehensively.

The 16-50 is long overdue for an update, however I suspect its performance at 2.8 is a far better than the 16-85 , but the extra reach of the 16-85 will make it a nice alternative.

I don't think that's true any more since the release of the 20-40/2.8-4 Limited WR.

I have properly centered copy, and it is really nice from 16-45 mm towards the end it struggles and glowy and unsharp at 2.8 I do agree. Flare, ghosting and distortion at 16 mm. biggest drawback. Distortion and ginger is gone with profile correction. So is 16 mm. Other than that. I do like sharpness, colours, and overall rendering. It could be sharper too.

Some say that it is big. But honestly, even if that PLM. version is going to be even bigger, it is not heavy nor heavy. Really.

If new plm version is going to improve on the things above as it is also going to be faster. Then it is a must buy for me.

Does anyone have any idea when they will release this lens? I hope it will be released with the K3 III - but what will be the reality.

I think they said they were going to try and have it for the K-3III release but were not sure they could make it. With the delay of the K-3III perhaps that makes it more likely they will both come out together. Or not.

Yes but then you have to pay for the assistant you need to carry the extra body with that 60-250. On union turf, probably two assistants.
