Ah ok, must have mixed it up with something else. From my fuzzy memory the front element moves a few mm inside the barrel.

aha, mid post i realised perhaps I got the info from the pentaxforums review and yes i found a handy gif courtesy of pentaxforums itself. So "external extension" maybe not but it's not fixed either. Which was precisely my point.
Probably doesn’t move enough to suck water in during a thunderstorm.

It can still be sealed with a filter screwed in, though. Well, you'll have some measure of humidity getting through to the lens because of the slight pressure difference, but it should be very little.

The outer barrel lenght is fixed, seems like a nice lens.

That kind of action my tokina 28-70 did too and also other lenses which has internal focusing, like DFA 15-30. lenght don't increase, elements have to move regardless when we talk about zooms.

I didn't assume that an extending design would be inferior in terms of weather sealing. Now that you mention it it probably is but the reason for mentioning it was that minor movement might be an advantageous design compromise between telescoping and fixed.

Well if it's an internal zoom the elements that move are internal. If the front element moves it's not an internal zoom right? You have focus and zoom but I assumed both had to be internal for it to be classified as internal.

Probably not safe for you or your camera out in a thunderstorm.

Yes, there is lenses like my DFA*70-200 which is completelly internal, where nothing moves outside. But I have seen lenses marketed with IF design if outer diameter does not move. But stuff inside does. I agree that 11-18 front does move a bit, so it would not count.

Front moves inside the barrel, so it's like inner focus.

The DA*1650 is shown mounted on the camera in some of the K-3 III official product photos. My guess is that this means the wait shouldn't be very long.

price will be similar to the DA* 11-18mm I assume? I'm really curious about its performance.

I'm still hoping Pentax manages to release the DA*1650 in time for final reviews of the K-3 III. The full reviews would then be super boosted by a DA*16-50 cherry on top of the already good K-3 III!

I expect some moaning about the size though...

I guess somewhat lower - fast UWA zooms are typically more expensive than similar quality standard zooms.

Wide-angle lenses are more complicated for DSLR - farther from the flange distance.
