Off topic but still: why has the entire thread dedicated to the HD Pentax-D FA 85mm f/1.4 ED SDM AW simply disappeared?

I would assume there's not going to be a hard stop at infinity with the PLM focusing system as well, right? Do the other Pentax PLM lenses have a hard stop at infinity when focusing manually?
If t is like the 55-300, it may spin but just like when it is autofocused it will not go past infinity. Now I am going to mount mine and test it to verify. The thing is, if it focuses like the 55-300, you will neve need to use manual focus unless you are doing astro.

PLM? Tess might finally have to upgrade her k-5, which will be 10 years old next year.
I assume this one will have the kind of specs the first one didn't. The first one ended up being a target for the Tamron and Sigma 17-50s. The DA* 16-50 didn't offer much beyond a much higher price. It will be good to have an OEM lens that out performs the cheaper competition.

That's what I look for anyway.

SO hopefully after the 85m 50 55-300, 70-200, 150-450 etc. it will be a premium lens where you get a little bit extra for paying OEM prices, which is the way it should be.

I take it you'll be getting the K-new to go with it?

Considering how much use I got out of the Tammy 17-50/2.8, this lens should be great. If I were still an APS-C shooter I might consider using just the two PLMs and calling it a day.

For what it's worth, the DFA 28-105 isn't even focus by wire and it does the same. There's a "soft stop" when you reach infinity or MFD but the ring keeps turning.

Great minds keep thinking alike I see . I asked the same on the other 85mm thread over in the SLR Lens Discussion section: New HD Pentax-D FA* 85mm F1.4 still coming in 2019? - Page 5 - PentaxForums.com.

IIRC you started the disappeared thread right?

I hope that the "soft/non-stop" focus rings go away. It's probably the one thing I dislike about my 18-135. Had a very frustrating evening with that lens and shooting fireworks due to this functionality of the ring. Should have brought one of my 28's instead...

I think the K-P is more her style. Until we know if there is a tilting back screen on it, a K-new is not in the cards, especially since if it's not on the first version, it could still be on the second. Until then it's "if it ain't broke don't replace it."

She doesn't shoot bursts or need a faster frame rate. K-5 IQ is still very good. The K-P gets better or exceeds her K-5 IQ after a slight dip in the K-3.

We'll have to see what the K-new has to offer. Just from the interview posted recently, the lens guy looked much happier than the camera guy. He looks like a man under a lot of stress. When he is all happy and relaxed looking like the lens guy, I'll have more confidence in what's coming. But, since I don't know these people, who knows, maybe that's his happy face.

In terms of the K-new, they really didn't say anything. Anyway, we won't be buying anything before April 2021, so there's lots of time for things to happen.

Nah, it was mostly tongue-in-cheek so that you can "borrow" it to sub your K-3 . If she doesn't use a lot of long heavy lenses the KP should be plenty good.

That's too bad. I was hoping for a lens that could focus beyond infinity and show me what lies there.

Don't really mind about the rubber ring, but I want to keep the little distance window.
That's the main reason I prefer the look of the older DA*.
However, I can understand changing to a ring type motor will take away the distance window.
Since the PLM focus system is not mechanically connected the little window is of no use. The focus ring on a PLM system is only functional when the camera is turned on.

Is there any real speculation on what the launch price will be?

Trying to figure out how bad it will be in CAD$...

I would imagine it would be about the same price at launch as the DA* 11-18 was.
