Same as @Kunzite: because of focus by wire, which is made necessary by the pulse linear motor.

I used to love the original DA*16-50 a lot.
This new one looks ugly but very similar to a tamron outlook.

Theoretically it could have an LCD screen on the barrel, right?

Eh, personal preference I guess? I was never a fan of the "ribbed" rubber rings of the older DA lenses, the new one looks closer to the old K/M/A lenses so it's a win in my book. The new (well, since the 18-135/16-85 more or less?) designs are also more understated and sober which I like; the names in gold around the distance window looked a bit tacky IMO.

EDIT: I'm, curiously, not a huge fan of Tamron's new barrel aesthetics. They are very sleek and "modern" looking, but somehow the Pentax lenses look more rugged, they give off the impression of being serious workhorses.

I hope the others eventually follow, but the DA*50-135 and DA*60-250 are already optically superb despite their Sudden Death Motor AF.

And @BigMackCam - what rock have you been living under?

There was extra wait, unfortunately, but at least our APS-C shooters are getting a PLM instead of DC motor, so I guess it will be worth the wait!

Great minds think alike:

^ The focus motor of the HD Pentax-DA★ 16-50mm f/2.8 ED PLM AW is a pulse linear motor. There is therefore no helicoid in the lens and there can't be any 'mechanical' focus distance / depth of field scale. There could be a tiny LCD screen with this information though (some Canon and Zeiss lens include such a device).

Would be really hilarious if this lens turned out to be the sleeper amongst the 3

Don't really mind about the rubber ring, but I want to keep the little distance window.
That's the main reason I prefer the look of the older DA*.
However, I can understand changing to a ring type motor will take away the distance window.

Of course the focused distance with DoF scale for the chosen aperture will be shown via overlay in the viewfinder of K-new

this is awesome news, I have used the heck out of my 16-50, but since I got my K1, i would really love to be able to use it on the fullframe setting, now my wishes are being answered.... now, watch out for the huge influx of old 16-50s you are going to find for sale, once I get the DFA lens, I will have no need for the DA, the same goes for my 50-135, im really hoping they do the same with that lens....

The HD Pentax-DA★ 16-50mm f/2.8 ED PLM AW will be an APS-C lens (DA) like its predecessor, not a 24x36 one.

I would assume there's not going to be a hard stop at infinity with the PLM focusing system as well, right? Do the other Pentax PLM lenses have a hard stop at infinity when focusing manually?

A 16-50 full frame constant f2.8 lens with good optical quality would be quite the imposing device... thinking about how large the 15-30 is.

A DA*16-50 update is very welcome after 13+ years. Obviously the 50-135 requires the same update quite soon. These two lenses are brothers and should feel the same. More older DA* designs may follow. The only new design in the DA* class is the 11-18 and fits nicely to the 16-50/50-135 combo. Nice, everything is good.
All three * primes for APS-C are also not up to date. 55/200/300 are from 2008. The 55 is the only large aperture lens in this list. 200/300 updates need to be designated to FF. The 200 has a difficult standing against the DFA* zoom or third party offerings. The only large aperture lens here is the 55. I don’t think we will see any new large aperture DA * design in the future. This territory will be covered by DFA* lenses and in part by the full frame ltd‘s.The new 21 Ltd may fill the large aperture wide angle gap. FF users will ask for something like a f/1.4 wide angle prime, aps-c users will ask for a compact lens....
The more you think about the new lenses, the more sense it makes to update the 16-50, add a 21 Ltd and finally release the *85. Updates for the FA ltds and DA* zooms will come soon. Not taking into account any idea about sales numbers, availability of parts or the virus. The next really new design in larger aperture / prime land could be the wide angle prime from the roadmap. Most likely not an update to the FF zooms, maybe a budget addition that is also on the road map.
Time to go and play with the current gear.

I doubt that a redesign of the DA* 200/2.8 is worthwhile. The D-FA* 70-200/2.8 do the job. They should rather make a D-FA* 200/4 Macro......

Agreed. Probably cost about €3k though if not more
