That 4mm on the short end from 16-20 is about the same, relatively speaking, as the 10mm on the long end from 40-50...
So if you like wide, the 16-50 is a great range.

In my experience, the focus speed on the (old) 16-50 is about the same as on the 20-40. I would expect the new one to be a good deal faster.

My only real complaint with the 16-50 is how it shields the built-in flash, leaving a shadow at the bottom of the image.

I don't use built-in flash.

I have had a Pentax-compliant Vivitar flash since my children were young in the mid-1980's, and it still works just fine.

I loved my 16-50 until the SDM gave up. Good to see another take on that lens in a new design

I converted mine to screw drive. It became considerably noisier but the AF hasn't stopped working since. Unfortunately it got bumped around a bit too much and got decentred. I hope the new one will have a better build quality like the 11-18/2.8 seems to have...

I did that too but finally said good bye to the lens when going fullframe

Considering there is almost 15 years difference in design time between the original and the upcoming lens looking forward to good things both optically and mechanically

It's a shame that the lens isn't out with the camera to really make use of that new AF, but considering the latest lenses Pentax has made, I expect nothing short of fantastic.

I've read many interviews where lens designers point out how much have changed (improved) in the last 10 years.

I think the lens is completely new in design. There was a short account of using this lens in one of the CP+ 2021 videos.

This video is mostly about the FA Limited lenses, but 1h 02m there is a discussion of the new DA* 16-50/2.8 with a few samples taken with a K-3 Mark II.

Judging from the DA11-18/2.8 I agree, but we'll only be able to judge once the lens is released. I only wish it was here already.

I had the Pentax 16-50 for a while, but images from it were not as clean as those from the cheaper Sigma 17-50 which I also had. Sold the 16-50.

Now when the NEW 16-50PLM is eventually released (sooner than later please) I'l pretty confident it will replace my Sigma. Between the improved compatibility with the K3III and better tracking potential, plus bonus weather-sealing (which hasn't yet been a factor), I can't imagine any reason not to, even if I might delay the purchase if the initial release price seems unduly high.

Is that safe?
I have a Pentax-compliant Metz from the early 80s and don’t dare to use it on my digital Pentax cameras.
