It's not a problem. I have no issue with anyone doing anything with their gear. I said you have to be rich to enjoy it that was the important bit. If one has a hobby to play with lenses that's fine it's just odd, in my view, to do it with such expensive top of the range gear designed for clean performance. I have no issue with people being odd though.
Thank you

WOW. This is a nice update to the much SDM riddled 16-50.
Anyone has a link to english press release from Ricoh from May 2020?

The only official publication from 2020 i could find is in german:

It would be nice if they were to release a less expensive KAF4 lens in the 'normal' range - even a DAF lens would be OK if it were not too big/'perfect'- - but there is only so much that they can do right now.

I agree. It has been puzzling why they introduced the 55-300 and did not release an updates 18-135, or maybe an 18-55. Those lenses come with so many of the bodies that they are critical in forming people's opinions of Pentax AF. I think they would sell a lot of lenses to existing users if they made a faster focusing 18-135 and sold it for around $500.

Well, all signs are showing that Pentax is aiming to be "prestige" brand, so cheap and good lens will make little sense.

I don't think the 18-135 needs an update. Focussing may not always be instant, but it's never slow, and always reliable. Pictures are good. And price-wise, people are selling their used lenses for 150-200€ around here. I wouldn't buy a new 18-135 with faster focussing for 500€ if I could get used copies of the existing lens for 200€.

Fast focusing is not always the issue.
KAF4 would be usable even on K-70 bodies that have suffered "Dark Image Syndrome".
The existence of such a lens would be a good 'fall back' position/option.

That's an interesting angle I hadn't thought of It would certainly be nice to be able to continue using a "faulty" camera without noticing that it failed at all, but I would rather like the next "beginner" camera from Pentax to avoid a fault that is known for almost 10 years in the first place tbh.

Yes, it would be better for them to fix the problem ..... but they don't seem to have so far.
Using the software that allows the K-3iii to gracefully use older lenses would help {because of older lenses with aperture rings}, but the availability of a less expensive KAF4 "standard" lens would help even more.

Yepp. A KAF4 kit lens would mean less strain on the aperture mechanism in the body, so it would last longer for the few occations a 'kit lens shooter' would use a pre-KAF4 lens.

Yes, lots of hard choices with this lens. I'm limiting my lenses heavily, selling what I do not need and 16-50 and 55-300 would be sort of optimum currently for me first for trains second for planes, with 35 macro as "one trick pony" for flower photography if I am able to get it in silver. But then 20-40 is like 2000 PLN (so like 500$) cheaper then new lens and covers what I need including WR, it's drawback is lack of UWA which I sometimes use for close shots of trains and in museums and slower AF.

Argh, I hate such decisions.

If you want a bit of close up shots and comaprisions new/old then check this.

HD PENTAX-DA?16-50mmF2.8ED PLM AW????????????????????????????? - YouTube

And ignore EN translations. There is some nazi tech in the lens according to it. Some Fuhrer technology
Thanks, that pretty detailed review was well worth watching, all 24 minutes of it (though not all the auto-translation should be taken literally!).

The improvement in CA in the examples shown is astonishing - from "ouch" down to effectively zero. Edge sharpness at f2.8 shows a big improvement too and the bokeh looks wonderful. Not to mention faster focussing and the other improvements too. The negatives are of course its greater length, weight and (considerably!) greater price - but Ricoh can't defy the laws of physics or economics.

And now the K-3iii silver is in stock at SRS, I have some serious economic decisions of my own to make in the next few weeks ... £3,300 worth of decisions!
