And after almost 15 years of being an APS-C company the fraction who went full frame is probably less than half. Maybe much less, because of price. I'm among the APS-C faithful who certainly never moaned for a big, modern, edge-to-edge prime or the DA*11-18. I don't have a use for those lenses that justifies $1000+ pricetags.

I will almost certainly figure out a way to buy the K-new if it has the D500-ish performance we're expecting. I'm surprised and happy that they're making a camera that seems to check most of my boxes. But I have no idea how that's going to sell to the larger market. If I were someone who mainly shot portraits or landscapes or architecture I probably wouldn't buy this camera, and there are many Pentaxians who do just that. I think this is pretty risky for Ricoh, because I know I'm in a minority in trying to shoot sports with Pentax and a higher-cost action- and wildlife-oriented camera might just flop with their established base. And with no marketing it's hard to see it making an impact with users of other brands.

Didn't they say they were aiming for a 2020 release? I take that to mean they're pushing hard to try to make November for Christmas sales. I'll be very surprised if this comes out in July.
Yes, they said that delivery will be 2020. I’d be surprised if there will not be more accurate info of this camera before that. And for that there should be ‘just’ couple more months. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear in my writing. Couple more months for knowing what it will be and perhaps even preorders.it is ‘midsummer’ in one month. At Finland. After that coupe months and summer is over. That time will just fly.

Imagine examining your DoF on an 8x10 print instead of a 2x3 print, and you'll get the difference. Or try it out.
I grew up with split screen fucusing on my SV, Program plus and ME. I understand the process. It's not the same.

I'm sure it's very nice, but also something that I'll probably never experience.

Or, who knows? Maybe the future is a pair of glasses that's wirelessly connected to your camera, and it projects the equivalent of a huge 8k display in front of you with a framing grid and that's your viewfinder.

I'd be quite happy with more information this summer. Could give me incentive to more aggressively save my pennies!

Pentax don't make enought different models to make their flagship too specialised - I think it will be more like the K-3 - the frame rate as competitive without being ground-breaking, and everything else was pretty much just a good competent rugged gerenral purpose camera with the attention grabber of the anti-aliasing simulator (which I'be never used). It will be better than the K-3 in evey significant way, and it will have some novel feature yet to be revealed, and that will be it - people will make all sorts of negative comments about what it doesn't do, and mock Pentax, but it will go on taking very nice photographs for years to come.

I wouldn't really call that an attention-grabber. I bet if we did a poll here not 10% of the users have ever used the AA simulator. I'm not even sure I'd recognize a situation where it would be useful, and I've certainly never enabled that setting.

I think it's something that's possible with IBIS, so they implemented it and listed it as a feature because it was essentially no cost to include. But most folks could go their whole life without missing it.

If you're photographing something with a cross-hatch pattern (cloth, mesh, wire fences shot at certain distances, etc.), the AA simulator very effectively reduces moire. Doesn't always completely get rid of it, mind you, but it certainly reduces it to far more acceptable levels. Some raw processing software allows you to do this in post, of course, but not all. It's a nice in-camera feature... not one a majority of people will use, admittedly, but it does have its applications

Thanks.

Just picked up the K-3ii sitting here in my test to see how long it takes the battery to drain sitting on my desk, and found the AA simulator option in the menu. Not so hard... except that it has three options! Type 1, Type 2, and an unlabeled wavy icon. No idea what those do.

So I looked it up in the manual. Type 1 says it balances resolution and moire reduction. Type 2 prioritized moire reduction. The third option brackets and takes three photos, one with Type 1, one with Type 2 and one with it off. Also, it notes that none of this works when the shutter speed is greater than 1/1000th.

So, yea, okay, I'm probably never going to use this.

Page two of the in-depth review notes that the AA simulator is one of the functions under "Advanced Sensor Functions." And that it's unique to Pentax. I guess that might have grabbed somebody's attention.

The D500 has great AF and a very high frame rate, a tilt/touch screen, a 100%, 1.00x OVF and great build quality. The negatives are that it has roughly the same dynamic range as the KP at low iso with a lower MP count, it has neither pop-up flash nor GPS, there's no sign of IBIS and it's gi.gan.tic. It's bigger than the K-1! It's heavy, too (at 860 g ready to roll), certainly heavier than any other APS-C camera I can think of right now...

So yeah, if Pentax gets the K-new 'within spitting distance' of the D500, it will be a compelling, competitive product as long as it isn't ridiculously expensive.
You forgot the 'Stupid Nikon Settings Banks' as a negative.

Ah, true. I never really use custom modes so I forgot that that's also a point of contention. Score another one for Pentax!
On a related note, do other cameras have anything similar to the INFO quick access settings? It keeps menu diving to a minimum.

Back in those days, other people also reviewed Pentax cameras

Like I said, it probably won't be used by a majority of owners (just like pixel shift). But it's useful in the right situations, and surprisingly powerful. The shutter speed limitation is almost irrelevant, as the situations where you'd need it aren't going to be sports, birds in flight, wildlife etc. Moire is more likely to occur in fashion / portraiture (with materials), street and architecture (certain textures and building materials), perhaps industrial landscape - that kind of thing.

It's worth reading the PF review section on the function, as it's more powerful than you might think. Even if you never use it, it's better to know it's there and what it can achieve, right?

Back in the software developers used to talk about the "80-20 Rule":

"80 percent of the time only 20 percent of the features get used"

Applies to many complex systems.

The problem in my case is that it takes me too long to turn it on.
I have now set up 'U5' mode to turn on AA simulation bracketing in case I think it would contribute to my picture.

I have shot a video with my K-1 and there laskijat of AA filter is clearly showing. Not so much in photos. Only, you know, when you see it(moire) it is too late.

Btw, I went for my photography walk today with my DFA50 macro. I kept screen at the ’dock’ and also used my OVF as I have found a still to use my camera even 25 cm from my eye(because focusing work so much better than with screen especially with macro) honestly. Yes, more cumbersome. But most of the time, no problem. If the new screen has better visibility when viewed from 45 degree or so, I’d say that most of the time it would not be any kind of problem. OTOH I do have perfect eye sight. (Now age is little gnagging always my close distance ability to see, but yes. No problem.

Here is the challenge for all of you having tilt&swivel screen. Keep it at the ’dock’ and try to see what happens. With K-1 I have this marvelous OVF, and it is just a pleasure to use. If this new thing has OVF like this and possibly even better because they really made sure it is good...then what is the problem. Try it out!
