Updated Roadmap - May 2020

Hey!

Looks like the roadmap has been updated to include the DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 and the D FA 21mm ltd!

Has there been info on the "large aperture wide angle single-focus" lens in the roadmap? I would have assumed the newly announced 21 is it but it's not, it's a separate item.

No, it was there for years and it's indeed a separate thing from the D FA Limited. The 21mm is what was previously known as the "ultra wide-angle single focus lens".

The wide angle might be the 3rd D FA* prime I reckon.

DFA* = large aperture
Ltd = compact and still around f/2

It is interesting to see lenses surface that are not on the roadmap before lenses that are on it for quite some time - not counting replacements that will not be listed long time in advance. Not sure whether Pentax changed their mind developing a Ltd wide angle before the DFA wide angle.
What they have shown today ensures confidence in the brand. Three new own designs with new focal lengths and quick AF engine plus a camera with attention to detail look great. I am waiting for the 85 for years, now there is a lot more stuff worth buying almost available. APS-C and FF look bright today.

I think it is safe to assume that as soon as the 85mm is out the door, the engineers will go for a weekend of heavy drinking and adultery in the back alleys of Tokyo, before they put their full attention to this projected WA, which will be in the same philosophy as the 50mm and 85mm.

So they are finally upgrading a DA* lens to HD coatings . Hopefully it will be optically updated as well since it was designed for 10mp. The 21mm is interesting.

My understanding is that it's redesigned optically too, so they could have a lighter focusing group for the PLM.

Well they moved the AF/MF switch down and the window has gone, so it is not a simple coatings update

Don't forget PLM and electronic aperture. It's a whole new lens.

If the 16-50 PLM is as fast focusing as the 55-300 PLM then my 18-135 will probably end up being replaced with this new 16-50.
Especially having f/2.8 aperture available.. and I'm not a fan of the 18-135's zoom creep....

Right now, my list to purchase (pre-order when available perhaps?):
- K-New with battery grip (I'll sell the K-5 and keep the K-S2 as backup, I think)
- DA* 11-18mm f/2.8 (I'll sell my 13mm f/2.8 and my 10-20mm f/4-5.6)
- DA* 16-50 PLM (I'll sell my 18-135mm)
- Some fast telephoto... (I don't have this aperture range covered.. maybe a 70-200 f/2.8?)
- FA 77mm LTD... someday.

Can't wait! Going to be an exciting year!
