Ah - there's your problem. I don't run these sort of purchases by SWMBO

At $1,900 it's $100 more than the Sony version and $400 more than the Nikkor and Canon versions of this lens.

Of these four lenses, only the Nikkor is NOT weather resistant.

Of these four lenses, only the Sony has an actual aperture ring (a critical feature for those of us who shoot multiple systems).
.
Are you comparing to current prices, or prices when these lenses were released? And, are they as good as this Pentax version, based on MTF?

Just got the $CDN quote of $2499 from my local shop - pretty hard to justify one on my end, but I'm looking forward to seeing what you all do with it.

This is a once-a-generation lens. Were they when they were released?

The thing is, the Canon, Nikon, and Sony 85/1.4's are not "versions" of the the DFA 85/1.4. Each lens has its own independent design, features, and performance profile.

Truth is I can't I(well I COULD but I won't) buy both this lens and the upcoming K-new. With so little yet known about the new camera and with a 77 already in hand I can wait until more is known. I could always convince myself I'd buy the 85, use it for a couple of months, and then sell it for a couple hundred less than I paid, but I already know I won't. It will be a semi-permanent part of my stable, and that would preclude buying a K-new.

This new Pentax is $100 more expensive than the highly regarded Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4. I'm not going to buy this new Pentax lens, I'm keeping my adapted Zeiss Milvus 85/1.4 lens for use on my Pentax K-1 cameras.

I prefer the Zeiss 85 Milvus': rugged all metal build, silky manual focus and exaggerated focus throw, IQ, and 77mm filters (this Pentax takes 82mm filters).

I'd expect nothing less. Especially that you'd decide this without ever holding or trying out the Pentax version. You don't need experience with the lenses you put down. All you need is your love of all things Zeiss. Nothing else is worth a look. We get it.

And let's not forget the advantage of manual focus...

I ran it by mine by saying I was going to buy a new lens. I don't do it often.
We left it at that.......
I'm still waiting for an ETA, I predict June 18th.

I'd love to see some of the comparison photos you've taken with the D FA 85 and your Zeiss so you can point out why you prefer the Zeiss.
BTW, how's the autofocus speed and accuracy of your Zeiss compared to the D FA 85?

In case anyone missed my sarcasm; this thread is about the lens being available for pre-order. Let's not turn this into yet another "it's too big-too slow-too expensive-too heavy-too many elements-not enough elements-too many plastic parts-not as good as a [insert anything here]-they should have used a different font for the lettering" thread.

Actually, FW, I think someone posted the MTF curves showing this thing beats the Zeiss Otus, which is $5000 or whatever.

Would make this arguably the greatest portrait lens in the world in any brand. With autofocus, too!

I think Monochrome watched a video on its design, where the engineers studied the Canon/Nikon, then the Otus, and found flaws. They ended up being radically different, with a concave front element.

Reckon it could produce some stunning photos for your <f2 collection!
