I find it amusing how some people just want to see Pentax fail. They're probably the same people who danced in glee when Konica-Minolta gave up the ghost (pity, I liked Minolta).

Anyway, it's the same gloom and doom again. No matter. They'll probably just be frustrated at the end of each day, seeing how Pentax is still chugging along.

comparing w/ Pentax ? a lot more... certainly the ratio is not like sales of K20D to sales of 450D

PS: I did not count all people w/ 40D and 50/1.8 there, just in case if you have any illusions about that.
Dunno, it's not a matter of going with the brand the masses gravitate to. Some of us just wants value-for-money.

(Frankly, I'd be more cheesed at Nikon for *not* managing to put out such a basic thing properly after I bought a D700, than I could ever be at Pentax for making me a K20d... If in the future, I can afford *Nikonian* frustrations after this little adventure in bootstrapping... I think it'd be hard to be mad at Pentax.

But, it's the Internet.
How much is the Nikon 85mm? Canon's is around $400 or less new (85/1.8) and < $300 used. And while there is a 85/1.2L it's suffering from slow autofocus (probably due to the great mass of glass to move around) while not being that much faster.

In 2006 and 2005 "alot less people can afford to use canon gear..."

Have a look at these numbers.

I put these totals in another thread here and they are two and three years old.

Sales of digital cameras and then sales of dslrs by brand in 2006 and 2005 and I'll guess most people are dropping cash on equiptment with no intention of recouping costs or being professional. How do they fit into the idea that people buy equiptment to earn money with it? I highly doubt these 4.3 million Canon dslr sales versus Pentax two year total of approx 460,000 dslr camera sales are being used for money making oportunities. I find this data interesting as 2005 and 2006 was back when Pentax was Pentax and not Hoya's Pentax. I look foward to 2008 total camera and dslr sales numbers due out in 85 days from IDC. Also back then, 2006 and 2005 Nikon had no full frame dslr platform yet still sold 2.9 million dslrs, still 1.4 million less than canon whose had offered 3 full frame dslrs by end of 2006. In Aug 2007 Nikon launched D3. July 2008 nikon launched D700. I look foward to 2008 dslr data from IDC.

no need to compare to Pentax. what does Pentax have to do with it? a lot less people than you think can actually afford to use canon gear and make a steady living. a large percentage of 'pro' shooters that use canon use company owned or Canon 'rented' lenses. that's not to say that they do not own their own equipment but the percentage of those who do are much smaller. let us not forget that Canon made itself big by giving away millions in equipment during the 80's & 90's to 'pro' photogs mostly in the sports segment. their 'pro' support program is HUGE. one can rent canon lenses from canon and many other places, sometimes free of charge.

The Canon 85mm f/1.2L having slow autofocus? Rubbish!
Just used my bro-in-law's 1Ds Mk III with this lens and it is simply superb shooting candids in low light. Fantastic camera, quick operation, but also a very heavy camera.

Eh, you can't diss that 85. Or any Canon 85. Great lens before they ever even *put* AF on on it. (and to return to an earlier theme, I question the *need* for AF on a lens that fast. If I can't focus a 1.2, I can't see.)

It's all relative. Try it next to the 85/1.8 next time and you'll see.

(edit: if you're shooting candids you're probably happy with it, but for low light indoor sports it ain't great... the MkII version is much improved but still lags far behind the 1.8)

Have to admit, in a silly thread, if someone said you had to have one lens and only one lens forever, my answer was the 85 1.2L. I use a 1.8 SSC for almost *everything.* Wouldn't even notice such constraints so much.

Let's not forget there's nothing *wrong* with this.

Not that *I* got any such notorious bennies, but this is just the kind of thing maybe Pentax is being criticized for *not* doing. If I'm on a paying job, you can't *pay* me to use something that's gonna make me not get the shot.

May as well save the film and not go.

What's a company gonna do, say, 'Pretty please invest a quarter your house's value in our stuff, wear our flag, and if something goes wrong with a ten thousand dollar lens, we'll say, 'You should be making enough money to have a spare fast 600?'

Feh. I say that's perfectly fair play if you want 'pros' to take a chance on your new thing. Better than hiring celebrities to swan around with your compacts, anyway.
oh no, Im not saying this is wrong. it was obviously brilliant, because they have likely recouped that ten fold. what I was getting at though was 1: that's the type of deal a lot of 'pro' canon shooters get and have been getting for along time (which is designed only to move those 40D's and rebel Xti's deejjjaaaa said didnt count) but it shows that a lot less pros actually purcahse canon equipment to use than he thinks. this leads me right into 2: which is that Pentax and Canon have two completely different philosophies and more importantly market shares yet both are still alive and viable. showing that market share is not the deciding factor for .. well really anything.

I believe you would find that in the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" aisle. Try the 4th floor.

Lizard Kings and peanut butter and banana sandwiches aside, if you don't have glass, you can't sell cameras. Unless Pentax has some new FF lenses hidden away (FA ltds don't count - they are "old tech"), there will be no FF body announced. It really is that simple. That being said Panasonic pumped out the G1 with only two lenses for it, but there are adapters already out to mount tons of legacy glass.

Face it...the reality is there are people here who desperately want Pentax to fail (for whatever reason). Some live to complain, and thrive on negative energy. I seem to remember a Star Trek episode about that....everybody, GROUP HUG!!!
Will I need adapter to mount one of my 8 FF Pentax lenses on Pentax FF Body? Hopefully not.

Are we talking V1 or V2??

By canon standards it is extremely slow, especially when compared to the 85/1.8... Ask Roentarre he has one (V1), awesome piece of glass but it would frustrate me with fast moving subjects..

There's not really any pity needed: they're still going very strong. The only thing missing is the name.

I guess. I appreciate what Sony's doing for the A-mount, but I guess it takes some getting used to to see Sony as what KM has become.

Sony topped Pentax dslr sales their first year

Go up a few posts and study the dslr numbers. Sony sold zero dslr in 2005 and after acquiring Minolta camera division they topped both Olympus & Pentax dslr sales in 2006 and this without needing the "Minolta" Logo.
