If you want to know why Sony has been successful, look at their ad budget, combined with market penetration on related goods. It ain't rocket science, and they've been selling p&s and bridge cameras for years.

As for the sensors, Sony wants to make money. I doubt the dSLR division is going to tell the sensor division that they can't make chips for another company. They'd get laughed out of the office...

Not selling any sensor to Pentax, no.
Let Sony themselves and Nikon 6 months exclusivity, yes. This is exactly what happened before and why Pentax had to design their own sensor.

Nikon's 12 MP FX sensor is a Nikon design and also manufactured by Sony.

Again, that's the word on the street.
Thats true to my knowledge, similar to the 12MP DX sensor in the D90, though in that case it is a Sony design modified by Nikon and still manufactured by Sony..

Maybe that is a reason (apart from money) that Nikon got exclusive (time limited) deals? as their engineers are involved/invested in the design process?

Here's a link to Nikon sensor makers 5 years ago:

Look who made Nikon's D1, D1h, D1x, and D2h sensors:

Nikon

I've read D3 and identical D700 cmos sensors are Nikon made. Whereas D3x manufacturer is credited to Sony.

Nikon older dslr Sensor Maker Info is in line 3 from top on this chart:

yeah the D700 is designed by nikon, but many reviewers still claim the actual manufacture is done by Sony... This is common though, many parts are manufactured by external companies (for all brands) even if designed in house..

The D3 and D700 sensors are most likely manufactured by a less-known company, Renesas. I'm not sure if that's been officially stated, but it has been officially stated that it's not Sony, and I believe it was Thom Hogan who made some very strong hints towards Renesas being the fabricator? He's generally reliable with info like that.

There's no evidence that the 12mp FX sensor is made by Sony. Either way it was designed by Nikon, who by all intends and purpose own the IP and petents. So it doesn't matter who makes it, in the same sense that it doesn't matter which ODM makes iPhone for Apple.

I would love to see a 5mp APS-C version of the sensor on the DP1, its not going to happen I know.

we need to make sure we understand the difference between design and manufacture. I think even my post was worded incorrectly, because Dan is correct Pentax DID have a large hand in designing the 14.6 CMOS, and the one in the GX-20 is slightly different. but both are manufactured by Samsung.

I believe the same thing goes for Nikon. whether the sensor was 100% designed by nikon or not its still likely manufactured by Sony or as mentioned, possibly by Renesas. neither Nikon nor Pentax and as far as I know Canon aren't silicon chip manufacturers.

but going on the term 'designing' Pentax is as shown with the K20D, more than capable, regardless of who manufacturers the silicon.

This is all the same as in the computer parts business, a couple examples:

* AMD graphic card are made by... TSMC most of the time, which is a fab business. The only purpose of TSMC is to fab roducts for others.

* Apple computers (and every other big OEMs) do not manufacture their products themselves. They are made by few big manufacturers as Quanta, Asus etc.

This is all just manufacturing contracts and has absolutely no importance for us (but is very important for the designer of the product of course).

Pentax can use several sensor in new cameras - Sony CMOS 12.2 MP, CCD 14.2 MP,
CMOS 24.5 MP and Samsung CMOS 14.6 MP - (or maybe Samsung makes new one).
What will Hoya choose?

Sony 12MP Cmos would be logical choice IMO (but this IS speculation)
