The rumor - Sony has new high-speed CMOS APS-C sensor 15.2 MP.
And new A800 will change A700.

maybe - K30D will be with 15.2 Sony. K300D with 14.6 Samsung.

Wow...f***ing Samsung partnership, increase factory costs, waste sensor R&D for 0,8 megapixels...awesome.

Be patient, I think the future is not that far out (no, I'm not saying Pentax will launch a FF camera at PMA; stop dreaming! )
Technically, the 5D is dated and considerably less refined than the K20D, but as a photographic tool... it delivers time and again.

I can only dream of a camera with 5D's photographic technology (sensor + AF mainly) but done "Pentax's style" (ie very well built with lots of intuitive controls and customizations)... maybe at Photokina 2010??

If they do then surely the prices of old Pentax FF lenses will break through the roof... And these are not cheap even today...

Nice but put it in a D400 and you're looking at a €1800+ price tag (soon to collide with the D700 price).

K30 will be a competitor to the D90 (12MP, 4,5fps): 14,6MP + 4.5fps for €1200 will be a big enough step up for Pentax. Now if Nikon or Sony issue a €1200 DSLR with this 15MP/6,5fps chip... well it's going to be tough competition!!

I would prefer Pentax to introduce a few f2.8 sensitive AF points instead of going towards higher MP and fps.

Exactly, that is the D400 rumor: Feature Filled, $2,000

Nikon D400
MSRP $1,999.00
Key Features:

New 14.8 megapixel DX format CMOS sensor effective 14.3 megapixel
Self-cleaning sensor unit (low-pass filter vibration)
ISO 100 - 6400 (with boost up to ISO 25600 and down to ISO 50)
14-bit A/D conversion
Movie capture at up to 1080p 24 fps with stereo sound
Nikon EXPEED Plus image processor 30% faster than previous EXPEED image processor
Super fast operation (power-up 13 ms, shutter lag 40 ms, black-out 90 ms)
Kevlar / carbon fibre composite shutter with 200,000 exposure durability
Multi-CAM3500DX Auto Focus sensor (51-point, 15 cross-type, more vertical coverage)
Auto-focus tracking by color (using information from 1005-pixel AE sensor)
Auto-focus calibration (fine-tuning) now available (fixed body or up to 20 separate lens settings)
Vignetting control in-camera
Automatic chromatic aberration correction
Custom image parameters now support brightness as well as contrast
Seven frames per second continuous shooting (nine frames per second with battery pack)
3.0″ 922,000 pixel LCD monitor
Live View with either phase detect (mirror up/down) or contrast-detect AF, face detection
‘Active D-Lighting’ (adjusts metering as well as applying D-Lighting curve)
Detailed ‘Control Panel’ type display on LCD monitor, changes color in darkness
Buttons sealed against moisture
Same ultra-fast startup and shutter lag as D700
Scene Recognition System (uses AE sensor, AF sensor)
Picture Control image parameter presets
UDMA compatible single CF card slot
Virtual horizon indicates if camera is level (like an aircraft cockpit display)
Extensive in-camera retouching
HDMI HD video output
Magnesium alloy body with connections and buttons sealed against moisture

And continuing on with the APS-C dslr rumors heres the new Sony set for launch at PMA 2009:

Sony A800:

15.2Mpx APS-C CMOS Exmor “R” sensor
ISO 100-12.800
6.5 frame per second
New high speed flash sync
9 double cross f/2.8 AF sensor (23 total AF sensor)
New metering and AF sensor with tracking and previous focus
Dual AF Ultra-Speed motor (?)
Wi-Fi built-in
Will be announced on PMA09 and launch on April with 3 new DT lenses…
If true, this sensor could be the base of the D400. This could also mean that we may not see the D400 at PMA, since last time with the D3x Sony got few months lead before Nikon can release a camera in the same class.

As far as prices for D400 and D700 colliding, the D700 is on its way back up on Feb 1st 2009. Likely to $2,700 or so due to Nikon's announced 18% across the board price increases for USA market. They've already raised prices elsewhere the past couple months: UK, Canada, australia, ect... Seeing this it became a very good reason for me to add D700 and one lens I've wanted: 14-24mm 2.8.

At another dealer who raised their prices at first hint of nikon official price increases I saved $800 on my purchase from Jan 14th 2009. Or you could say when I bought my K20D for $689 in Nov 2008 I got it for free ;^)

So I've got all three dslr brands covered. Canon 5D, Nikon D700 & Pentax K20D.

It's not possible having a Nikon + a Sony + a Pentax announced in the same time: Sony delivers them to different manufacturers in different phases. Maybe Nikon starting to fab on is own APS-C too?

About the D400: they really want to totally destroy Canon not just surpass them, it seems.

No in-body IS, no business from me. With that, only Olympus, Sony, and Pentax offerings interest me, though developments from Canon and Nikon are always nice to have so that they would push other companies to improve, too.

I really think that in-body IS is that one feature that is not marketed enough by companies who have it.

vinzer, I totally agree. In body SR is one of the features that are a deal breaker for me as well. Not that I would but if I had to choose another body, I'd take a hard look at Sony for that alone.

Shake reduction is why I added k20D

I own a couple Samsung K Mount 6mp dslrs too. My first two dslrs purchases. Neither has shake reduction and I really wanted a shake reduced body to see what I could do with my Pentax glass and made for Pentax mount lenses. Having K20D inhand I have to say its way more feature rich than my 5D but the D700 is pretty feature rich too, however its 3 times the money, soon to be 4 times the money. and of course both are full frame with bigger viewfinders which are a great benefit to me and my aging eyes.

That said, the nikon lens I've wanted since I handled one some 15 months ago:

14-24mm 2.8

is a STELLAR piece of glass. I've always been drawn to ultra wide photography and this nikon lens is The King of UltraWide. In all reviews "Sharp as Primes" at every focal length of 14-24mm. I can confirm if ultra wide capture is your thing this is a Must Have lens.

Had it not been for the "heads up" on 18% nikon price increase I would have waited for further price drops. I think 2009 will go down as the year all the prices we are use to seeing globally Will Go Up instead of Down.

Which means I am now done buying brand new equiptment for the next year, maybe longer. Hopefully in the meantime Pentax will all Wow Us with fast frame per second, more af points, as opposed to just the same K20D specs with more megapixels. I don't need video and I have a feeling thats another direction camera makers are heading in. So for me the next year or two, I'll happily deploy the 5D 12mp, D700 12mp and the 15mp K20D.

Nice read and very informative. There isn't anything you outlined that I want/need. My Pentax K10D/Sony A 700 combo will carry me through at least another year unless Pentax comes up with a small K20D with GPS and better low light AF.

Careful on those rumors

They are just rumors, along with that Nikon rumor. If, an A800 comes out it will most likely share the same sensor platform as the D400.

The A800 won't be a replacement for the A700, it will be a totally different class of camera than the A700, just as the A900 is.

I see nothing on the horizon that indicates there will be an A700 replacement this year for certain. An A800 could be likely but so could an A500/600. Sony has promised only one camera this year but that is all anyone knows at this point. Sony will expand the lens lineup this year, a switch of focus from last year which was primarily bodies.

What Pentax does will be totally separate from Sony. They are going with Samsung now for the semiconductor business. So whatever new sensor comes for the K30D will be either the same good 14.6 mp sensor with improved noise control, or a brand new one.

Nikon will stick with Sony for its semiconductor business which is smart. Canon stands to lose more this year as a result of growth between Sony and Nikon, possibly Pentax.

All Pentax AF points since 1981 are F:2.8 sensitive (the ME-F had users selection between F:2.8 and F:5.6). Thats why Pentax AF is perceived as slower under certain condition as ir demands higher precision levels.

Mmm I thought Sony stated (no I have no link, just read reports from other users) that there wouldn't be any new camera until july/august ?

As for sensors, I do not see Sony doing any different than before: they will launch the sensor in their own calera and Nikon almost at the same time. Then Pentax will have to wait 3-6 months to have access to it. Sad but that's why Pentax had to design their own one.
