Thanks for posting this info Class A.

I have watched the video and read the brand positioning statement.

My take on it is that Pentax are formalising where they have been heading for a few years now.

As every other major consumer camera maker pivots to mirrorless cameras, Pentax are planning to maintain and improve excellence in optical viewfinder SLR systems, focussing on the 'joy' of photography. As a market positioning statement, they are aiming the be for Optical SLR's what Leica is for Rangefinder's - a specialist niche company that produces high quality photographic instruments for those that want that style of photography.

It is a strategy that sees them remain in a niche, but also survive by being well differentiated from the markets major competitors.

In fact with the Pentax Values just released, it is a declaration that they are adopting a very different strategy from the major brands, and essentially starting to crave out their own niche marketplace.

I have every expectation they will be successful in achieving their Values and Vision.

This was my take on it too. Of course, no-one can know whether SLR can maintain such a niche against the mirrorless juggernaut. Whatever the current weaknesses of EVF, they will surely improve over time. But I for one appreciate the sentiments behind this Pentax vision, and hope for a long road of quality and innovation ahead.

Now, what of a hybrid viewfinder?

Yes, he accidentally opened the battery door.
No. It's the memory card door. Same shape as the K-1 so maybe dual slots.

See that's what I don't get. Why wouldn't it be expected to have dual slots.. they're all like whoaaa haha
I noticed I typo'd 'battery door' I knew it was an 'SD card' door, as I bet Kunzite typo'd as well.

The K3 has dual slots, so I'm sure the Knew will too. The question though is whether they are both SD card slots.

Oops, that's what I wanted to write! Even more, that's what I read in FozzFoster's post!
(you will believe me when I say I know where the battery and memory card doors are, right? )

They gave a pretty vague answer to the question about possible mirrorless system with new mount.

While I am quite happy with my K-1 I would like to see Pentax offer a mirrorless option.

After all, if I remember correctly the main reason Pentax are such a small player in the market these days is due to the fact they dismissed digital as a passing fad that would never overtake traditional film in the world of photography and refused to embrace the technology until it was nearly too late.

Deja-vu anyone?

Ricoh purchased Pentax in 2011.

That was supposedly Kodak, except it's false.
It's even more false when you change it to Pentax.

Pentax was about to make the first proper digital full frame camera in 2001 but sensor tech was just not there... they lost a lot of money in the effort.

Why is that the key phrase? Professionals use the same cameras that enthusiasts use. I've seen a bunch of photographers either with press credentials or clearly being paid to be there (concerts, weddings, demonstrations, political events, you name it) and... their cameras aren't a completely different thing. They are cameras. Bunch of them used crop sensor cameras, even. The horror.

This topic will be become nicely debated very quickly I think. Again I enjoyed the insight, I welcome and agree with Pentax's positioning statement. All good from my personal perspective. Looking forward to next week's video.
