They negotiate the charging voltage - this is the sort of thing I was talking about.
I have never seen a “split” cable - I didn’t even know there was such a thing.
There are "2 in 1", "3 in 1", even "4 in 1" phone charging cables, one USB-A male (usually) split into USB-C, micro USB and perhaps other connectors - the idea being that you'd use a single charger/port to charge several devices at once.
I'm thinking that if e.g. an USB-C device would negotiate a higher charging voltage (if not through Power Delivery, maybe through Quick Charge), the micro-USB device connected next to it might get fried. Anyway, it's not something I'm willing to try.

This is what I'm talking about; phoebus pointed out to another type of split cable.

I don't have the K-3iii but I do have the GRiii, and I tested with that.

The official AC adapter is the AC-166 which is indeed included in that kit.
I'm pretty sure you can use a power bank, as long as it has the same characteristics as the AC-166 i.e. 5/9/12V and 3V (that's 3A for each of these voltages, not only the lowest). Mine - bought specifically for this purpose - is a Huawei SuperCharge (did I call it a Xiaomi in other posts? My bad!). Not that I specifically recommend this product, any other meeting these specs should be fine.

The cable (USB-C to USB-C was one capable of delivering 100W (I got this right the first time, yay!).

So, the power bank was able to supply the GRiii. The K-3iii should require a higher current but if the power bank is true to its specs I don't see a problem here.
Thanks so much, this is extremely useful information.

My point is that this has nothing to do with those of us who use USB with a single unitary cable.
I used my Kastar chargers this part week with the {unitary} cable that came with one of them {I’ve long since forgotten with one}, and I had to fear plugging it into the USB power sourced by my Ford Fiesta - and it charged the Pentax batteries for my KP and my Q-7 just fine; I even went from the dog park to my car and switched to one of them when my Q-7 when I ran out of electrons. The situation is actually fairly simple - we don’t need to think of complications.

OK, we got lost on technicalities it seems. I guess the real concern is to use quality stuff - and that's it.

Though I'm not sure whether or not USB A can be used with PD, Certainly my powerbank has USB-C and USB-A sockets, but only the USB-C will go above 5V.
So the USB-A on your powerbank supports no QC or PD.

More specifically, I believe the USB A connector doesn't have the additional connections that are required. USB C has more conductors than the 4 wires of USB A. QC may be possible, but PD is only a USB C thing.

I have several forms of “power bank”, one turns AA-batteries into a USB power source, and my car, which turns gasoline into a USB power source, both of which give USB-A access to that power. I have all kinds of cables which have a USB-A plug at one end, and some kind of plug at the other end. My wife has a traditional power bank {the input is USB-C, the cable that came with it is USB-A at the other end, and it also has two USB-A outputs}.

I don’t see power bank output as a USB-C sort of thing.

Most phone chargers have USB-A to USB-A cables so that isn't the problem, specifications-wise.

Plain 'vanilla' USB power is just 5V ~1A.

'Quick Charge' mode is proprietary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quick_Charge

'USB Power Delivery' is an official standard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hardware#USB_Power_Delivery

While the earliest USB-PD specification was USB-A and USB-B based, this appears to be subsequently deprecated in later version of the spec.

So to summarise, to get the current standard USB-PD, you need a USB-C connector at both ends. While the K-3iii can charge from a standard USB supply (as packaged with the camera), you need an USB-PD certified supply (that will have an USB-C outlet) to fast charge or externally power it.

I have both a battery-pack and AC adapter that are USB-PD up to 12v, and they work perfectly with the K-3iii for charging or powering.

That is great.

There are lots of ways of powering a USB-C, and many of them probably work with a K-3iii.

In the two years this thread has existed, members have probably discovered them.
I’m tired of this.
