Wow, that's a lot more detail than I was expecting this far out from release. Great!

Immediate highlights that we didn't already know:
  • Named K3 iii
  • Release late Feb 2021
  • Effective pixels 25.73 Mpx
  • ISO AUTO/100 to 1600000
  • 1620K touch screen, 3.2 inch (3:2)
  • SAFOX 13, 101 point AF (25 cross type)
  • 12 fps in Raw up to 30 frames
  • 1/200 s flash sync speed
  • Movie mode: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264(MOV); 4K (30p/24p); full HD (60p/30p/24p)
  • USB 3.2
  • Wireless 2.4 GHz band
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS? I think so; see Playback View Unlikely
  • 820g with battery

No details of AF in movie mode.

Looks good to me. I will be very interested to see how the AF and high ISO work out in practice.

So, upgrades right across the board, including many of the most complained about features,

Presumably, if prelude is preface, the KP provides a floor, but now average users will finally experience a modern version of the Pentax experience.

For me, it looks like a K-P may still be in the works, it depends on price. For people who can't get what they want with a K-P the camera could be an improvement. However fr folks like myself who do fine with a K-3 a K-P is still enough of an upgrade to be attractive.

The KP does have a flippy screen and is available now.

I hear ya! I have a slightly different perspective. I'm holding out for the improved AF for B&BIF (Birds & Bugs In Flight, LOL!) and extra pixel density over my K-1 for crop mode.

We go to great lengths to improve IQ, expensive glass, best sensors, lug tripods, etc. But the single biggest thing that can effect IQ is the failure point of focus. If your subject, or the part of the subject you intended, is not in focus, all the other things that effect IQ don't matter a hill of beans.

So... I am anxiously awaiting the release and reviews of the K-new... Ahem... I mean K3-III to augment my K-1. Will love to see how the K-3 III focuses with my 150-450mm too. Good times!

You won't regret it. The KP is a noticeable upgrade in IQ to the K3 but both complement each other as they are sufficiently different (I use both equally but the KP for serious stuff). And the difference in price between the KP and the K3iii will buy you a cracking lens or two

Soooo...how about the K-new new? A fly landed on my head and suggested that it is KP tech, but built on the K-70 platform at a price point in the $1000 range and that both the KP and K-70 will be EOL at the new camera's release.

Steve

(...would I troll? The fly says no!...)

So like a downgraded KP? For more money?

We know the new camera is not built on the K-70 platform since it does not have an articulating screen, so I don’t understand how this relates to the new camera.
Are you talking about the next “APS-C” camera after that? {I’m kind of expecting the next Pentax-labeled camera to be “FF”}
For sometime, I have been suggesting that a combination of the K-70 and the KP might become the new “introductory” camera, however.
