Fotodiox also makes a version of the same type of adapter. They work a lot like the F 1.7x rear converter (but without the need for the teleconverter since the flange focal distance is shorter.

The Techart Pro Leica M – Sony E autofocus adapter is a bit different. It does not transcode Pentax autofocus protocols into Sony ones and vice versa. Used in conjunction with a Leica M mount lens or pretty much any SLR lens mounted with a lens mount --> M mount dumb adapter, it make the { lens (+ dumb adapter) + Techart adapter } assembly behave like an E mount autofocus lens. In particular, it includes its own helical and focus motor. Focus is done by increasing and decreasing the thickness of the Techart adapter.

Techart PRO Leica M – Sony E Autofocus Adapter – TECHART Adapters

Think of it as the glassless, motorised, M-E mount equivalent of the smc Pentax-F 1.7x AF Adapter.
Thanks for the explanation. It's a bit convoluted, but it does make some sense (and as a user of that TC I understand what you mean clearly) .

Wow, that is certainly a different approach to turning manual focus lenses into autofocus lenses.

Convoluted is one word. On a 61mp A7r iv, that means keeping 3 different mount surfaces (including one that moves) absolutely parallel to the sensor that also moves for shake reduction. What can go wrong.

Not sure what I'm missing here - it was my understanding the adapter controls focus using the mechanism inside the lens, rather than the adapter itself pumping to achieve focus. So where does the moving mount surface come in?

The Techart adapter has its own helical and focus motor as stated in Mistral’s post above

The Monster adapter (OP) will have an in-built motor to drive the lens' autofocus. The Techart method is the "adapter itself pumping" to achieve focus, mainly for Leica M as it is manual focus from the start and using other lens mounts is to just piggy-back on that method.

techartpro in action

Advice from the manufacturer is to limit the weight of the attached lens, from memory 700gs(?).

EDIT,680gms is FotoDiox limit.

Some people push the limits though and here is the biggest lens Ive seen on the techart.

In this case it should be the weight of camera that is critical, as the lens is attached to a tripod. With the camera moving during AF.

Kind of a stretched version of the Contax AX concept.

Aside from the first FF lot which were remarkably light, the newer ones are right on the brink at around 650g including battery and SD card. Add a grip and/or flash/etc. and you might tip the 700g balance they specify.
Unless you're considering the APS-C offerings, which are undoubtedly slim.

Funnily, the FotoDiox which is a direct copy says 680gms I think(trying to jog the memory, there was a lot of discussion a few years ago).

---------- Post added 11-20-20 at 10:49 PM ----------

fotoDiox says 680gms, techart is 700gms

At that point if you grip the body really hard even if the lens is mounted on a tripod you'll probably cause the AF motor to stall.
