[New product story on 27 November] Product Stories of New APS-C “K-3 Mark III” Vol.6

Product Stories of New APS-C "K-3 Mark III" Vol.6 (Wakashiro) | PENTAX official

It's about the design of the pentaprism shell.

As someone who cracked the K-1 prism cover that shell sure looks reassuring.

Question, does the USB charging function take up space? Tiny cameras/phones have it but I'm still wondering.

No GPS in there for sure. Interesting recess on the front of the body on either side of the mount, i've not seen that before.

Has there ever been such a drip-drip-drip of minutiae during camera development before? I am left yearning for the good old days when a new model just appeared. On the other hand, we have all been clamouring for information. Be careful what you wish for.

I actually rather like it. When a product lands, the thinking behind the small details is never explored. Feeding these little stories gives us an insight into the thoughts of the designer. Strangely, despite the fact that this contained little information, I want one of these slightly more lol

I like the release of information too. But instead of a drip format I'd prefer something longer, more in depth, and more complete, because that way the design philosophy will be more clear, sort of like a documentary style production.

Interesting - it seems that they made accommodations to the pentaprism housing to not interfere with lenses... many remember the issue with the K-1 and the bigger Sigma lenses. Sigma ended up footin the bill to repair the scratch on the K-1 and also modify the bulky lenses. It's good to see that Pentax listened and learned from that experience and made the necessary improvements not to do the same with the K-3 III, even though Sigma doesn't make K-Mount available in their newest lenses. Good work Ricoh!

Looks interesting and the news is coming slowly. Having recently upgraded from my K-x to the K70, I can be patient and wait for the actual camera to release.

Not really a recess compared to the K-3 II. It's just that the bottom juts forward on the K-3 III - compare K-3 II:

Those are for fingers, I would expect.

The design philosophy is similar to that of a fine wine and expressed in similar terms.

Ever since I first held and used a magnesium alloy Pentax body, the K-7 back in 2009, it's been the same: Whenever I, just for giggles, pick up a display body from the competition, I get this thought: "Gee, what a cheaply-made toy this is by comparison." Now, it may be true that similarly-priced highend models, those that are kept in the display boxes, fare a little better, but even something like a K-70 inspires that at-least-as-good-if-not-better sense of quality than competing models when you take it in your hands.

And Wakashiro is right: What you like to have in your hands is the kind of kit that you will bring out, carry virtually anywhere, and actually take pictures with.

Unfortunately, it is also a dilemma for Pentax offerings, and has been for at least decade: With the steady decline of brand presence in brick-and-mortar shops, and the demise of such shops generally, fewer potential customers will ever experience what it is like to hold a Pentax body in their hands, put it to their eye, and release the shutter.

I kind of wish that they would release a version with just the bare metal like the good old days.
