I mean, you would think that there must be something terribly difficult to build or incredibly innovative to justify a production delay of two years. Has this glass something special I'm not aware of ? (except an interesting zoom range ....)

Actually it really is way more than 2 years. Close to three if you accept the credible rumors, and the delay due to the re-design necessary for the "new" USM focus system which is about 2 years old in itself.
Whether it's 2 or 3 years (or more) in planning is irrelevent for the most part but interesting.... it's conception is as old as the 645D probably
I believe in addition to what was mentioned they added a tripod mount from the version seen in 2006 / early 2007.

Creampuff, my particular concern is why would a show sample which, being so close to release date, is no doubt a prototype and the same mechanical design they're tooling their factory for, be able to be knocked out'a whack that badly? After all, I'm likely to knock mine around too accidentally. What can they possibly "change" only weeks before it should be getting assembled in the factory that would make it impossible for any lens one of us buys to be plagued by the same aberrations & failings if knocked around? After all this time, the last thing I want to see is this lens suffering from centering defects, back/front focus problems, et al.

Can you imagine how many 1000's of people have played with the lens before he tryed it? It probably the same lens that was shown in September at the show.
I know they were trying hard to release the lens before X-mas but the large demand of the 200 and 300 set it back .

Well, let me ask this way... Plenty of lenses / prototypes were shown @ shows over the decades from all the manufacturers. As a complete neophyte in this regard let me then pose the question to anyone that often visits these shows ... how common is that type of failing in a show sample?

Agreed 100%, I didn't mean to pass my impressions as any kind of judgement on the final optical quality of this lens.

I was eager to see how it performed because it's a very useful focal range and it's the first 100% Pentax zoom of the recent DA* generation (no Tokina collaboration on this one AFAIK) and I expected it to be the best of the bunch: tough luck here, I'll have to wait for someone else to test it for me...

Well, K-m looks like a hit to me: itr's small and functional and the AF seemed snappy and accurate.

The body is small but the grip makes for a good prehension, even for big hands like mine.

hmm, I just came back from the Digital Photodays in my town, and the official for Pentax Germany told me it would "most probably" be available in the stores end of November for about 1300. DA* 55 1.4 and the Converter 1.4 should not be released before spring 2009 according to him ...... last time I checked with these guys, I got the opposite answers. So I guess I will have to wait until I see the first one i the store .....
Availability before Christmas was also the official information I got at Photokina.

Just spoke to 3 Pentax Reps at BCIT in Burnaby BC.

There was a small photo show in Burnaby BC this morning. It was sponsored by a local camera store (Lens and Shutter). The 3 Pentax reps had a good display and seemed to be quite knowledgeable. When I asked about the 60-250, they were a little evasive, but eventually agreed that it should be available for order in the next week or two (depending on the retailer). They thought it should ship early in January. The suggestion was to place your order as soon as possible, as they thought there would not be enough available to keep up with the initial demand.

adorama.com has the 60-250 available for order. No specific ship date listed. $1399.95

for the record, if any reader stumbles across this thread but does see the other(s) on this joke of a lens, it's been pushed to spring of '09.... some say "March". I guess they have to revise the "jewelry of it" some more (if you don't get that weak joke, that's the way it was being translated early on this year). :ugh: how lame!

Gave up and bought an old Sigma APO EX 70-200mm f2.8 and Pentax F* 300mm f4.5 .. combined they cost less than the 60-250mm when it eventually arrives.

Well despite some of the impending doom feelings on this thread, I look forward to seeing some samples from the production model. This lens has just the focal length I'm looking for and hope it will be worth the wait.

I've just read on another forum from someone who tends to be pretty reliable that the 60-250 is delayed yet again, now to the fall of 2009.
I normally detest Sigma, but the 70-200/2.8 is starting to look like a contender.

This lens is available here in SA and is very expensive.

The 50-135 retails for R 12 000 and the 60-250 R 17 500!

Surely the 50-135 coupled with a 1.7 TC will be the more cost effective way to go?
