That's not quite true. If the subject is moving in the Z axis, then the perfectly focused lens stops focusing while the mirror, then shutter move (PDAF can't function during this period). The distance travelled between pressing the shutter release and the actual capture of the image may be significant. AF tracking and prediction should continue to focus the lens all the way through the image capture. And hopefully with the K3iii it will.

PS Mirrorless isn't the full answer either, as there is still a discrete time between the last focus command and the shutter closing and re-opening.
And then some of those pesky subjects keep moving during the exposure...
How long before our phones and cameras adjust for that on the fly?

The phones probably are already - for cameras, it will depend on how fast processing can react.
I’m guessing it will turn out that the K-3iii has a quick processor.

I'm pretty sure I've seen predictive AF as a feature tied to continuous AF.
Just not on Pentax.

My PZ-20 had predictive autofocus in the old-school “guess where focus should be when the mirror goes up and the shutter opens” sense.

So it’s been around in Pentax land for a while now...

That doesn’t mean it was terribly effective...

Yes well, the AF on the PZ-20 was barely effective. I'm not sure how well predictive AF would work on a camera that could barely keep up with a half frozen snail.

As the owner of a ME-F, the PZ-20 wasn’t that bad.
When paired with the FA28-105, it did fine, even if its single point wasn’t very sophisticated.
