It has been around for years. I think they were doing a series on the current 50mm lenses from different manufacturers. Remember, dpreview just started doing lens reviews at the beginning of this year.

Yeah I read the review earlier ... not a nad review when it comes to comparing against other brands.

There are a few other posts within the forums as well in regards to the review as well.

Remember that is a film lens that pre-dates digital by a long way. The design is alot older than DPReview themselves which they also point out. Thus it is the last in the series of 50mm F1.4 lens to be reviewed because they looked at the latest and greatest, relatively speaking, first.

Now when the DA*55 arrives..........hmmmmmm

FWIW, I agree w/ them. A lot more CA than I expected at 1.4 and softer at 1.4 than I expected for a prime. That said, it's inexpensive and stopped down it's fine...

My conclusions on this lens differ quite a bit from theirs, to me chromatic aberration is the main problem of the lens and not the aspect you get at 1.4. Still a very good lens provided you don't shot with it under violent light.

Anyway, to me the FA limited lens lineup is not out-of-production (or even end-of-life), so they should be also testing the 43mm/1.9 ltd as it has been designed for the same use but with much more expensive elements.

Yes, but then they'd have to admit that Pentax makes the best prime lenses of all SLR companies. Where would that leave them with respect to their advertisers?

Still the best bang for the buck you can get when it comes to primes.

It is interesting that they chose to test an ~25 year old lens design from Pentax rather than a much more recent design such as the 43.
The FA 50/1.4 is, from what I've been able to gather, an identical optical design to the A50/1.4 lens which was introduced in 1984.

Silly questions, sort of off topic:

Do you think that they'll test older K mount lenses, seeing as they're still prefectly useable on the K mount DSLRs?

And they tested the first version of the 18-55, but not the second. Do you think they'll ever test that one?

They didn't do the 43 because they're doing a series on 50mm 1.4s.

Slightly off topic, does anyone know if the optics in the FA50mm are the same as in the M-50mm?

At the pace they're going, I expect their next review to be the DA50-200, in about 6 months from now.
