$799 would be lower than the US MSRP of the SMC version

If some of the CA is removed this is great. The new DFA 85mm F1.4 is great but heavy and costly for lots of us. This updated HDFA 77mm is hopefully a nice update. Also shows some kind of commitment to the brand which is a background worry with the delay to the K3 III.

Unexpected, but very nice indeed!

I'll be keeping my MIJ SMC trio, but I'll be very interested to see what the new coatings have to offer.

Wow. I would have thought the trio would have followed the styling and features of the new DFA 21 ltd. Namely, WR and DC.

That would have necessitated a complete re-design, which for many of us would be unthinkable.

Whoa. This update was at the top of my hope-it-comes-next list.

Now I just need to have Ricoh convince my wife...

And just like with hd 35/2, no weather sealing nor AF motor.

Thanks Ricoh, but no thanks.

My guess is its origin is like the FA35.

It's probable that the additional production run of Limiteds from when the K-1 was launched (I think Monochrome mentioned this) has been exhausted in warehouses around the world, they've been successful (clear profit, development paid long ago), and a new run is being made.

New lens blanks required, they might as well get the HD coating. No other parts need to be sourced, this is a great 'keep Pentax in the black or just in the red' strategy to please the Ricoh bosses. They surely appreciate a little division bringing in revenue for almost no new investment, as it has succeeded in doing for years during economic downturn generally and a crash in the camera market specifically.

Anyone waiting for this? Just a minor upgrade for future buyers. 77ltd wins over a DFA85 with smaller aperture for now. If the do the same for 31/43, what will be the new large aperture wide angle prime? Either they recycle 31HD or we can expect a f/1.4 design - I like the latter case.
