A glass element in the 31 limited has been removed. The SMC model had 9 glass elements, the HD model has 8. See the diagrams attached.

Speculation on reasons encouraged!

An error?
Omitting an element like that doesn't seem possible without completely altering the lens as a whole.

I would agree. A glaring graphical 'typo'.

The specification table for the HD 31 says "9 elements in 7 groups."

... especially if it's the element that contains the fairy dust!

Any more photos on this page from Yaotomi (a retailer), including how it looks with the two (!) covers removed. There is an AOCO mark on the prism, as with the KP J.

Regarding the Limited refreshes, I noticed that the 43mm now has the green finger point made of shippoyaki. This brings it in line with the 77mm and the 31mm.

Old

New

When I saw a presentation about the design of the lenses in Nov 2019, Ikenaga-san mentioned that this was left out of the 43mm for cost concerns. At that time there was a lot of scepticism in the company about whether the Limited series was viable at all, so they had to make cost-related compromises with the 43mm. It sold well and they were able to do what they wanted with the 77mm and 31mm. It’s nice to see this small aspect of the design perfected 20 years later.

I guess that Ikenaga-San and Iwasaki-San might discuss this history in their session tomorrow evening.

To those who are more familiar with the release schedule of these, based on the news we have when should they be shipping from adorama etc? I’m kind of tempted to pick one up just to see if I like them enough to consider grabbing a K1 to go with my KP 🤔

April 2021 is the targeted release date.

I knew the target, was more asking about a WAG on the actual date based on experience from those who pre order from adorama regularly

The major retailers in the US will have the lens within hours to a couple of weeks at the very most. They most likely have them sitting there well ahead of time and then can start actually selling them when the go-ahead is given globally by Ricoh.

About the missing element, I think someone just didn't have enough coffee that morning, because there's no way they just took a lens element out of an otherwise unchanged stack-up.

If that's true, then DPReview just misreported it. The press release refers to "a completely round-shaped diaphragm". Unclear if that means they changed the curvature of the blades in some way.

I haven't studied aperture mechanisms in detail, but it would seem impressive to me if the aperture were exactly circular at every aperture setting.
