Originally posted by luftfluss I owned the DA 20-40 for two days... I returned it because my copy was a lemon. However, the snaps I took with it demonstrated rich color, strong contrast, and well-structured images that had a strong sense of dimensionality. It is really the nicest-rendering lens I've ever used, even better than the other DA Limiteds. I have the 20-40mm range covered capably by the DA 17-70/4, but it is hard to ignore how special the DA 20-40 can be.
Unfortunately for @jatrax and other K-1 shooters, there isn't an equivalent for FF.
I got the DA20-40 last summer but have not had a lot of chance to go out shooting with it. The one time I took it out for a family event, it really produced nice shots (mainly single/group portraits). I like the kind of background blur where the subject is isolated but you can still make out the context. The DA 20-40 met my expectation in this respect, without any visually distracting bokeh. It handled the sun and extremes of light and shadow very well too. These are the things I'd enjoyed in my other limited lenses, so I think it deserves the Limited name.
Having said that, I think it's best to think of it as a 30mm lens with some room for adjustment, or a two-in-one (DA21 and DA40 in one package). When I first tried it in a shop I saw it as another zoom and I thought "Really? Is that it?" So it took me a while to realize that it would be a convenient main lens to slot between my 15mm and 77mm.
