~$400 or so. If Pentax can produce a 30 with good edge-to-edge performance they'll have something special. If not, why buy the Pentax over the Sigma?
A valid question Christer, and perhaps one best asked of Pentax themselves. The same question could be applied to the 60-250 in relation to the Sigma or Tamron competitors at f2.8 for less than the DA* f4. There are plusses and minuses either way, and I'm quite sure similar trade-offs will exist with the DA*30 and its competition.

Consider the DA 35

I can't believe that a lens of similar focal length to the DA 35, but faster, with SDM and weathersealing, will cost less than the DA 35 (seems to average around $400-450). But I can always hope

Unfortunately, there's no way (IMO) that it will be that cheap. Since this lens is on my wish list, I'll be thrilled to be wrong. I think the pricing of the new DA*55 is a good indicator of what to expect.

Mmm sure but the DA30 is a DA, not a DA*.

I doubt it... what does the Sigma 30mm 1.4 cost? A 30mm 1.4 DA and sub $500 price would not be out of the question.
But this is pricing of the new pentax owned by Hoya.

And your reason is exactly why sigma 30mm f1.4 has been so popular among all brands

I'm pretty sure that the lens roadmap shows it as DA*30. I hope it is, I would like a weather-sealed walk-around prime, and this is a good focal length.

If so, price will follow. I still expect the DA(*)30 to be less expensive than the DA*55 but not by that much if it get a * as well.

Honestly, what I hope for is that Pentax stay true to the philosophy of the 50 - fast, inexpensive (NOT "cheap") and high quality - not DA* quality, but up to the FA f1.4 50.

Not quite scalpel sharp wide open, but close, scalpel sharp in the centre ~1.5 stops down, sharp across the frame ~4 stops down. Eight or nine ap blades, maybe six or seven if they're rounded.

And the kicker would be if there were an option for it to be a kit lens. Not replacing the 18-55mm II zoom, but to have it there.

I'd imagine the Pentax would then be kicked to the top of the pile again as a student camera.

I expect Pentax to keep "translating" the old FA lenses to crop sensor equivalents. So I expect it to be bright, 1.4 or maybe 1.7.
However, I think the era when a cheap normal prime would satisfy many customers is over, therefore the price is higher as well as their sales margin to make it profitable.

My thoughts:

It's DA* ...

Just going by that, I guess it will be weather sealed, and pro quality.

And it will be the one prime that everyone (who has SDM) must have, which means it will be much faster than the kit lens, and indeed probably significantly faster than the F2.8 zoom which means it'll be 1.4.

Which means it'll cost probably similar to the Sigma that already exists but they'll of course try to trump the Sigma in every category by design; price, size, weight, functions and performance.

All in all pretty exciting to think about.

If Sigma can make a 30mm f1.4 then Pentax certainly can... and it's MSRP is just over $700. If Pentax came in at 30mm f1.2, $750-1000 would be reasonable.

The difference between these two manufacturers is that sigma is willing to sacrifice quality for speed, but pentax has a reputation to uphold and might limit the lens to the range it performs best in.

Understood. I just believe Pentax CAN do it without sacrificing quality if they put their minds to it!
