I had to connect my KP to my PC with a USB cable to copy the update file onto the SD card. The firmware update performed correctly.

My question is whether anyone was able to copy the update fine onto the SD card by inserting the card into a PC or laptop. My PC and laptop (both windows 10) would not copy the file onto the SD card stating that the card was write protected. Yes, the slider on the SD card was in the unlock position.

Anyhow, I did get my camera updated, but I would like to know why the SD card seems to only be writable while in the camera.

Thanks for any help!
I managed it ok on my K-70 inserting the card into my laptop (Windows 10). Was able to copy the update file to the root directory. I then formatted the card in-camera to remove the 'update' file.

Following. I am on the fence: being someone from the more conservative kind (at least for things like that - don't fix it if it ain't broken,) I will wait to upgrade my K-3 and K1 Mk1,5 until I am certain there are no bugs introduced with the new firmware.

I wonder is there a quiet unsung engineering hero back in Japan reading through this thread with a satisfied smile on his face looking back on maybe 6 months worth of work? I hope so, and salute you
@ricoh-imaging - perhaps this would be a great challenge video | easy enough to improve AF algorithms with newer processors and faster hardware, the genius here is to improve the legacy stack in parallel, both cameras and lens and should be applauded.

I did a quick before/after comparison and I can confirm - the autofocus of the my SMC-Pentax FA77 seems to be much snappier and locks on better to the subjects. I haven't had the lens for long enough to take it on a proper shoot, but when I took it on a walk I always felt it was a little unreliable and indecisive when focussing. That seems to have changed now.

I'll try to find some time and report if anything changed with my lenses (including Tammy 70-200/2.8)
If algorithms changed for various lenses, who knows ...

I'll update my cameras and try to see if there's any improvement. Fascinating that they can improve cameras after purchase.

Thanks,

So far my K1 "1.5" seems fine with the new firmware... and I had been slack and skipped at least the last update...

But don't go looking for "1.5" firmware

It is a tongue-in-cheek expression to say I upgraded my K1 (as you will be well aware.)
Thanks Eric!

I wonder if super resolution is completely software based. That would be a nice surprise from pentax if the could add it to my K3 in a firmware update.

Not at all - when I worked with physical engineers, they considered what we did as a part of the device that was changeable.
