Updated on my K3 and my FA77 I guess feels a little snappier. Could just be in my head, but I'll take it.

😯 I'm only a poor (but proud) k5 owner. No firmware update for me.

For the K-5 the Pentax firmware site lists the latest as:

"Changes to V1.16

Correspond to HD PENTAX-DA AF REAR CONVERTER 1.4X AW.
Improved stability for general performance."

Unfortunately there is no reference of the update being related to optimized focus operation for the FA Limited lenses (31, 43, 77mm HD or SMC variants). The earliest camera model for which Pentax specifically makes that statement begins with the K-3 original.

As a user of the K-5 classic (original) who was previously running V1.14 I have gone ahead and updated. Honestly, I would not usually expect a firmware update to make an obvious difference (I tend to think of firmware updates as more of a bug or issues fix). I have not yet tried the 43/77mm. I did use the DA 50-135mm and Sigma 17-50mm today with solid results. But that is to be expected as my particular K-5 was calibrated by Pentax service under warranty back in 2012 and ever since has performed with an impressively concise and repeatable AF without focus hunting issues.

There were at least three, IIRC, firmware updates to try to fix the K5's faulty AF when the camera was current. All of them failed. I suspect they just gave up on throwing good resources at an unrepairable problem.

or they changed how they structured the AF software, and changing the K-5 version may take more effort than they are willing to put into it.

I know that Ricoh purchased the branding rights to Pentax, but perhaps they can't push out firmware for a Hoya product, such as the K-5 (?)

Ricoh had the K5 in their line up for about a year. They bought Pentax in 2011, and replaced the K5 with the K5II in or after September 2012. My understanding is that later K5 bodies had most of the problems afflicting the early ones fixed, so I suspect once Ricoh got some adults in the room, they worked out the K5 issues as much as possible. Also, it looks like the latest firmware update for that camera was in March 2014, well after the Ricoh purchase.

Just a quick point.. Not sure if it's been mentioned already...
Don't forget to re-do any AF fine adjustments for your lenses
At least for me on my K-3, all my settings were reset back to zero after doing the firmware update.

Ah, I have to check with my K-1 MkII... sure they could write it in the release notes...

My K1 didn't reset, though either something has changed in the AF algorithm or I didn't set the AF up on my D FA*85/1.4 particularly carefully as I had to recalibrate it. I will be checking all my AF lenses now for calibration.

Please let us know the outcome. After doing a firmware update on a previous camera, I found that my lenses needed to be re-calibrated as the optimal AF Fine Adjustment settings had changed.
