I had the original version for a few years. This update looks like a very nice lens.

It is good to see Pentax getting some good field reviews out early on the new products

I have no doubt that new 16-50 zoom is a significant update from the old DA* 16-50 2.8 SDM, optics and autofocus.

Goodday everybody! For those who already had the chance to see some of the video's, you must have noticed that I'm very impressed with this new lens.

I'm looking forward to future tests and results that will without a doubt confirm my opinion. In the video above you will find quite a lot of work I made with the K-3 mark III combination and the new DA* 16-50mm.
For those willing to read and for a gallery with a selection of images, I wrote a blog as well: HD Pentax 16-50mmf2.8ED PLM AW ⋆ Mike Muizebelt Fotografie

Best regards,
Mike

I would like to see a comparison between the old and the new one zoomed to 50mm to get an idea of the size with the barrel extended. The second video is the first where a glimpse of the new lens zoomed is shown, but it's not clear if it's fully to 50mm or just partially zoomed...

Great footage from these guys as usual though!!

Thanks for that compliment Wim! It's not my best product image (a quick telephone image.....), but I've added a photo for you with the barrel extended.
I sold de SDM version years ago so no comparison possible atm.

What worries me is that they're once again talking about "the more advanced APS-C-format digital SLR cameras of the future" (they did that with the D FA* 85mm f/1.4, about FF ones of course).
It's as if Pentax will continue

Good to see info on the new lens but the price is way beyond what I'd hoped so I'll be sticking with my Sigma.

Nice. Single... whatever's that called? tube?
The SDM had two extending "tubes"; this design looks more rigid (and indeed, they're talking in the Development Story about increasing rigidity...)

Indeed, that was what I was wondering about. The double barrel zoom design made zooming rather heavy handed on the SDM version. Perhaps that will be smoother on the new one as well.

My Sigma 17-50 image wise is very good, no complains and if I need something better wide open there is always 15mm Ltd. But Sigma is not WR and here in Poland good chunk of the year it is either raining or snowing. Or both. Still price is mind boggling for something not used to earn money.
