A great review. Someone who seems to know that different cameras are often made for different purposes, and that cameras should be used within their limitations.

Quite agree, Clawhammer. In arguments of this sort, I tend to think of the old maxim that there are many ways up a mountain, each with its own distinctive views.

As Mattdm reminded us, wasn't Mike trying to explore the "low noise/high ISO" path up the mountain as compared to the "SR/lower ISO" alternative? FWIW, I happen to like a bit more the look of the K20D pictures Mike posted, and think that the D700's noise and color characteristics in his nighttime pictures are less pleasing than the K20D's renderings. De gustibus non est disputandum, so YMMV.

The future is extremely bright for Pentax. Is there any doubt that a few short years from now, there will be a Pentax DSLR with the same high ISO capabilities as the D3/D700? Sensors are a commodity item; what's special are the lenses. I recently sold a lot of Pentax gear to get the D700 (I was a Nikon person for years until I started dabbling with Pentax), and I dearly miss the FA31/FA77 combo.

Another dual user

Actually if you can live with manual focus the AIS 50/1.2 and Zeiss 85/1.4 are not bad replacements, different but very nice too... if you wany something more similar to the 77 the 105/2 DC would not be a bad choice

But yeah there not much around like the limited primes, that we can easily agree on.

I dunno, I bought (and loved) my K10D for the last couple of years, and picked up a D700 yesterday.

The D700 is utterly jaw-dropping. It's a very different camera to use than the K10D, but man. The images I'm producing out of it are just amazing.

It's a very different tool -- faster, more reliance on the intelligence of the camera rather than slowly picking your own focus points and taking shots -- and had Pentax added some of the features of the D700 (FF, faster AF, higher FPS) I'd have stayed with Pentax, as the image quality is beautiful. I'm hoping I can come back to the fold sometime in the next year or two, but in the meantime...
